throttle linkage on L

With my L, the throttle jumps out. The part has a saw tooth like part that does not stay put. There is a wire spring that a looks like it should provide enough pressure to stay put but does not. This spring is on one side and then a single tail of the spring tries to hold the linkage. Do I need something different? Can I grind the saw tooth part deeper? Any help is appreciated.

That spring is supposed to put downward pressure on the throttle rod so that the notches will hold it in place. Sometimes the spring has been mangled or replaced with one that does not work properly. I can take some pics of mine tonight for you if you like. Sounds like your spring is too weak. I would replace the spring and make sure it's installed properly before grinding on the notches.
 
The throttle rod is the part that has the teeth. Mine is also warn down a bit but I probably wouldn't grind the teeth better if it was mine. I think with some adjustments or getting the right parts elsewhere you may be able to correct the problem. The spring you have in there may not be correct and may be providing too much pressure. You can order the correct spring for a few bucks from the Ridenour's. I would also check to make sure your linkage is moving freely and not binding in the cable or at the carb causing extra force to pull that cable back.
