thrust washers

I am rebuilding a to20 trying to find out what holds the front thrust bearing to the block

Thrust on the Z120 engine is usually reacted out on the center bearing web with a flanged bearing. The TO-30 uses thrust washers to react out the thrust on the #1 bearing web.
having said that, I recall folks unable to find thrust washers and using the flanged bearings on TO-30"s. if you have the crank out, see where the thrust face is at. It"s a wide machined face that will rub the thrust bearing. Tor a TO-20, it should be the one in the middle web of the block.

the thrust washers on mine are on the front main looks like possibly scews but can not tell as they have been sheared off. I need to find out what they are so I can replace them

I think Jerry got the z120 and z129 mixed up as the 120 has the thrust on the number 1. There are 2 washers, one is on the inside of the front bearing and the other behind the gear and held in place by 3 brass pins,then shims are added to set the thrust to the required amount and you must install the front cover and pulley and tighten the bolt to measure the clearance on the center. I found mine on ebay but I think TISCO has them as well.

Mine were sheared off as well,I threaded the hole and found a small screw to fit and then cut the head off and bradded the end.

You are right about the thrust being on the #1 web. My mistake . I was thinking of another engine. However the Z129 OEM reacts the thrust out with thrust washers and the Z120 OEM used the flanged bearing shell. This is per the shop manual. It also says tyou can use the thrust washer on the TO-20 &, TE-20 if you use the TO-30 shells.

There used to be photos in the archives on one persons fix for your problem.
Also in the archives is discussion on using Z134-Z145 mains in Z120-Z129 engines. The Z134-Z145 use center main for thrust. If you look into this make sure the oil holes are in the correct spot.
