I think it is time for engine overhaul. Start right up still smoke out breather oil psi first start up around 45 psi after running it goes to around 35 psi. I thinking about have the overhaul on engine before spring should I have the top end rebuilt or the complete engine rebuilt? It not leaking oil no where I change oil last spring oil is black may have 15 to twenty hours on oil change maybe 1/4 quart oil use in them hours. Someone please let me know there thoughts I going have tractor shop do the rebuild. This is my estimate $1500 to 1800 for total engine overhaul. Is that about correct please share your thoughts thanks

How many hours a year do you use it? Does it really work or just putter around? How long a time do you run it without shutting it off and starting again? Does it foul plugs? What is coming out of the breather after it is up to temperature and worked for a couple hours? Moisture evaporating out of an engine will show from the breather as well as compression blowby.

You better ask the shop you are thinking of having do it for a real estimate, best case and worst case. Depending on condition of things like the head/valves, block (and sleeves?), pistons, and crank; I am thinking your estimate might cover parts but not labor.

You say it starts right up, uses a cup of oil (that's 1/4 quart) in 15 to 20 hours (or a quart in (60 to 80 hours), and 35 PSI oil pressure after being run a while. Oil turning black and some vapor out of the breather aren't alarming to me, especially guessing you are more puttering around with it than working it up to temperature and keeping it there for a couple hours at a time. If it was mine, I wouldn't overhaul based on what you have described thus far. JMHO

No fouling of plugs that I am aware of the plugs are fine I am not sure temp due to temp gauge is not working. But there is no overheatingboiling out of radiator . I bush hog a 2 acre fiield once month in Sumer and do 1 1/2 garden in the spring time putter around fencing etc on the other 7 acres thanks

I would get the temp gauge repaired. Then see what a compression test shows. If there isn't a problem there it will like to for many years before really needing an engine overhaul. JMHO

Sounds like a few hours of mowing a year is the heaviest work it gets. Maybe the garden, if you use a rototiller on it.

Edit: I will add that what you say you do for work with it likely would not properly break a rebuilt in. That could lead to as much or more oil consumption and blowby.

If you have that good an oil pressure hot, and only use a quart in 60-80 hours,I would leave it alone.
I would recommend getting a good temp gauge though.

Agree with Cush. Oil is cheap.

To all that reply. Thanks to everyone ! Someone said to add something in the gas tank and change the oil and cleaning breather washing it out with gas that my cut down the smoke I just can’t rember what they said it was Does anyone know? And how much you pour-in gas tank and will that hurt engine more? So I just need to order a temp gauge. Are they complicated installing? Thanks a million for the advise

I think was talking about about sea foam will that help the smoke or will that hurt the engine? I going to change oil this Saturday what do you recommend I been using 15w -40. Shell brand ?? And maybe adding the sea foam not sure how much to add I think may go in Gas tank ? For a temperature gauge what do you all recommend?

Shell Rotella T4 15w/40 is good oil. It is not uncommon for diesel oils to turn black quicker than oils for gas engines, just my experience and others may differ in results they have seen.

Some seafoam in the gas likely won't hurt, what and how much good it will do is always a discussion.

This site sells mechanical temperature gauges. There is a note in the description of the gauges to check the size (diameter of your existing probe before ordering, the early heads had a smaller hole and need a gauge with a smaller probe. One of the Ford guys may see this and have more info on the probe fit issue.

I’d suggest leaving it alone alone. The old, “if it ain’t broke…”

Pricing cylinder head work for an antique tractor I was tinkering with was a real eye-opener. Over a grand just for the head work and who knows about parts.

Also, it may be difficult finding a shop willing to do the work.

I would not run a tractor without a functioning temperature gauge. Or oil pressure gauge for that matter.

Some last thoughts; I say: you have nothing wrong with your tractor also except get a new temperature gauge, from this yesterdays tractor parts site, will work just fine for you. Put in new engine oil, Shell is good. Keep clean anti-freeze with rust inhibitor. Work that tractor, get coolant temp up to 190 degrees plus-minus. The worst thing you can do to your tractor putter around, letting the coolant temp drop. Gas or diesel, don't let idle! Keep coolant temp from cooling off. If not using, turn the tractor off. Use fresh clean gas, no ethanol! Sea Foam is good, great cleaning action for your carburetor and gas conditioner.

Follow the instruction on the can whether you use it in the crankcase or fuel tank.

There is the possibility you could see vapors increase as Seafoam will loosen things up.

I would put a new thermostat in that engine as well as installing a new temperature gage. The thermostat is often overlooked on these old tractors.

Since you say some yes-some no I will sign on to the no. From your description your engine is in excellent condition and the rebuild, if done to normal minimum standards will cost you twice what you are thinking.

Fix the gauges, check thermostat and run it. Sounds solid to me.
