Timing a M5 gas tractor

Take of front valve cover. Watch second valve(intake). Rotate motor until valve closes. Rotate motor 90 degrees to TDC. Should coincide with timing marks on flywheel. Rotor will line up with #1 wire. 1-3-4-2. To verify you can remove #1 plug and with stiff piece of wire feel when piston is at top. May have to clean flywheel to see TDC and timing marks.

Thanks for the reply. It’s running fine except it wants to run on when shutting it off, so I’m wondering how far advanced it’s set at.
Is there a way to use a timing light to to set the advance.

thanks

Is it stock? I encountered a M670 once that had LP heads on diesel blocks and it wanted to diesel after it was shut off. I think we calculated it had something like 11:1 compression.
The only way to get that one to die was to pull the throttle all the way down.

I have the same problem once in a while with my M670 Super and occasionally my 445... AFTER I properly set the timing lol. Idling it way down helps.

My 670s gas. like to run on aafter useage especially on a hot day. Set timing and point several times. Still does it. I blame on poor quality gas of today. Motor has never been touched.

Slow your idle speed down. A lot of engines will keep trying to run if they are at a fast idle. some productions M5 tractor did not have a solid pin for a idle stop, instead they had a stiff tight wound tiny compression spring pressed in the carb body where the pin goes. The stop screw was set against the spring and adjusted for normal idle.. It was printed in the Operators Manual "TO SHUT OFF TRACTOR MOVE THROTTLE PASSED IDLE AND TURN OFF KEY" This would force the stop pin (spring) to bend and close the throttle plate completely closed, and choke off the gas vapor.

That is good to know MMDEL. Any pointers on setting the governor on an M670 Super? I have followed the book but it doesn't help. Had the governor "rebuilt" and it didnt change anything. I move off of idle about a 1/4 inch and gain a few hundred rpms then about 1 1/2 to 2 inch of travel on the throttle before I get a response.
