I removed the fuel injection pump from my 96 Tafe 35di without setting the engine on TDC. I can replace the pump as I have not moved the timing gear on the tractor or the drive on the pump, and move the engine to TDC. To do this, I have to remove the fuel tank so I can loosen the #1 atomizer to find the compression stroke or, remove the front timing cover, (alot of work), to line up the factory timing marks on each gear. The FSM says put the engine at TDC and remove the pump and re-installation instructions say to just line up the dowel with the drive gear. The drive gear stays in the tractor and the pump is aligned to it by way of a dowel pin. I guess what Im asking is, as long as the dowel pin lines up, why does it matter if Im at TDC or not?
BTW, thank you thepumpguysc, he is going to estimate rebuilding my pump.
