Timing gear questions

The timing gear on my Ford 600 tractor has an aluminum timing gear with a steel insert where it fits on the camshaft. When the flywheel mark is on zero and the rotor is on for
cylinder one and the indents on both the timing gear and crankshaft gear are lined up, the valves on cylinder one are open rather than closed. The timing gear will only fit on the
camshaft with the key slot in one position. The piston is up so the crankshaft gear is correct. The problem is, the valves won't close until the camshaft is rotated about 180
degrees. Is it possible the steel center could have rotated inside of the aluminum in the timing gear? The camshaft is definitely out of sync. with the rest of the engine. When
everything is timed correctly the tractor won't run but if I advance the distributer as far as possible, it will run roughly and backfire. The only place I know of that has a timing gear
that I can compare mine with is over a hundred miles away so I wanted to see what some of you think before driving that far. Thanks for any input you can share. Russ
 
Turn the engine over one revolution and see if it is correct then, or do they use a different cylinder like the last one on the engine on Ford. I bet some one had the distributor turned one eighty off though.
 
I expect that you are trying to correlate too many things that do not correlate. I believe that you will find that when crank gear mark aligns with the camshaft gear mark, that no piston will be at top, rather all four will be at half way point.
 
I wonder how an alum timing gear will hold up in a tractor ??? sure sounds strange to me ? I'd try and find some made from steel.

I guess you are looking at the distributor? You need to put the engine on #1 top dead center. When the Intake valve is fully closed, keep turning the enbine and feel the piston until it is @TDC. Through the spark plughole. Also check the firing order and see if fallows engine rotation. Now check the distributor, the rotor should be pointing at #1. I am guessing it is not!

What you are saying makes sense. A couple of friends looked at it when I was gone and may have changed it. I didn't think they had messed with the distributer. I think this will correct the problem.
 
To check the valve timing, get #1 cylinder to TDC. Look at the valves on #4 cylinder. They should be in overlap. Rock the crank back and forth while watching #4 rockers. The exhaust should be just closing and the intake just opening as you pass by TDC.

If that is happening, the valve timing is correct.

Possibly the hub has spun in the gear but not likely.

If the cam timing is good, and the ignition timing is off, someone has had the distributor out, it was run with the clamp loose and has spun, or the roll pin has sheared where the gear attaches to the shaft.
 
Some motors line the timing marks up what they call 180 out. Some line up on TDC. I don't know why.

If the timing marks line up 180 out you line them up and then roll the motor one revolution to put it on TDC. Now you can line your distributor.

It really is that easy.

Do you have friends like I have? With friends like I have, who needs enemies? They think it's real funny to switch the spark plug wires around.

Whut he said, master that technique and you will never be stumped on timing issues again.
 
I have no experience with Ford tractor gas burners, but I can tell you their automotive engines from that era did not line up mark to mark like we do them now a day's. Check your manual for a pic.
 
Or to say it another way you're currently at TDC Exhaust/intake stroke, if you rotate it 360 degrees you'll then be at TDC Compression stroke which is also about when you want the sparky things to happen to make it run correlating this to distributor installation and timing.
