Timing problem

Just posted a video with sound; have replaced points, condenser, spark plugs. Tried to adjust to 10 before TDC.
Don t know what is wrong

I own a Ferguson TEA-20,(Made in Coventry England) with the original 6 Volt system.

On the Forward Face of the Flywheel,there is a DRILLED hole that aligns with a hole in the Engine block that attaches to the Transmission.

With # 1 power cylinder on the compression stroke,insert a DOWEL (Drill Shank,etc,etc,) that locks the flywheel to the Engine.

Inset the Distributor,turn distributor until POINTS JUST start to open...

Lock distributor in place...
In the direction of the rotation of the ROTOR,attach spark plug leads in the proper firing order.

It is possible, that NOT ALL of THESE MODELS of TEA-20s have only ONE drilled hole in the FORWARD FACE of the FLYWHEEL..??
My TEA-20 has only ONE hole in the forward face of the flywheel..

At one point in time,I read,depending on the MODEL of the DISTRIBUTOR makes a difference as to the point of static timing the distributor.

I'm away from my summer residence for several months,thus, I do not have the Maintenance Manual with me..

You need [u:4f16a38885]TDC on the compression stroke[/u:4f16a38885] as TDC occurs on the exhaust stroke as well.

The more I think about it, the more I beleive it could be my problem. Will let you know next wednesday as I am away for now. Can t wait to recheck

FYI:

Each tooth of the flywheel is equal to 2.48 deg. (360/145 teeth).

I placed a mark on ten of the teeth. I gave the tractor a pull and connected a STROBE light to # 1 spark plug (used a 12 volt battery on a work stand)) and found that the ignition was not at the desired timing point that I preferred 25 deg.

With the throttle set so as the PTO was running at 525 RPM I turned the distributor housing until the distributor was firing at 25 deg BTDC.

NOW: Here is a note to know.

ENGINE S# SIE to S8995E fitted with Lucas dist. MODEL D3A4 Lucas SERVICE # 40132 has a hole in the flywheel at 10/100/190 and 280 BTDC number 1 cylinder.

ENGINE S# S8996E onwards fitted with Lucas dist. Model D3A4, Lucas service No. 40146 has a hole in the flywheel at TDC # 1,as well as 90/180/and 270 deg before TDC.

CORRECT LOCATION OF TIMING PIN IS TDC of firing stroke # 1 cylinder.

I did notice that on U-TUBE there is a video of some one checking a TEA 20 igniting timing In the above procedure that I checked mine. Also in the FERGUSON ARCHIVES TEA20 Back to life a posted picture of a Ferguson WITH timing marks on the FWD face of the flywheel

Rechecked my tdc and got a much better running; listen to video. Still a bit of fine tuning to do

I have a 1948 TE20. I set the timing by using a vacuum gauge. Mine has a tapped hole in the manifold that I put a fitting into. I adjust the timing until I reach the
highest vacuum reading possible. I have set timing on 2 Fergusons and a Farmall H using this method. All 3 tractors start and run great even at very low RPMs.

Thanks, but how can I make sure it’s on the compressions stroke; just spent a few hours trying to get this Tea20 1951 6volts running properly. Got the valves adjusted. But the time is still off. Can’t figure out where the problem is

If you adjusted the valves, you should have been at #1-cylinder TDC when both valves were closed, to check and adjust them. #4-cylinders valves should have been on the rock (exhaust closing/intake opening) at that point.

If you are not on compression stroke timing will be out 1 revolution/360 degrees and it won't run at all.

If you pull the plugs, get someone to turn the engine with a hand crank or the fan, while you have a finger over #1 plug hole. You'll be able to feel the compression.

My grandpa used to stick a wire down in the combustion chamber through the spark plug hole to feel when the cylinder was at the top. Obviously, the wire was long enough that it couldn't drop into the cylinder and you had verified compression stroke as Mad Farmer outlined. At this point the rotor should be pointing toward the wire going to #1. If not, rotate the distributor until it does. As I recall the distributor shaft rotates CCW. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. Rotate the distributor until the points just close (CW I believe). With the cap off, ignition on and the points closed rotate the distributor CCW until the points just break. You should see the points spark. Snug it down and the tractor should be timed somewhere near (not exact) 0 degrees TDC. If you can now see a timing mark you can probably use that to get it closer to the right timing.
