Tire chains

You guys that run chains on your ford tractors in the winter, do you like them tight so they don’t move or do they work better if they’re just a tad loose?

I like them to be tight and also on top of the lug of the tires not down between the lugs

If you run them too loose the chain had a tendency to start walking off the tire, and if you don't catch them in time one side will walk off the outside and the other will go in till they actually fall off the tire and be dragging off the axle housing. A real pain. After awhile you seem to find the happy spot for tightness, I never liked them super tight either. Up here in the woods we always ran the heavy cross chains, never had to worry about those dropping down between the lugs of the tire. Years ago when we were skidding pulpwood and the snow got deep or if it got icy my Dad bought a set of those skeleton wheels off a neighbors auction, the old 8N would really pull then.
