Tire Chains

I have a MF 165, the rear tires are not loaded. When I bought it used, the rims were corroded and leaking. I replaced the rims and tires but chose not to load them because I work some muck and thought it might be more of a hindrance than a help. Although on the heavier ground and other tasks I wish I had the ballast, anyway I can't get around in the snow worth a darn. I'm thinking chains would be a real help. New ones are pricey for my budget, I see a bunch on marketplace but they just give the dimensions. Can anyone tell me what size I would need for 16.9- 24 tires? And any other advice, thanks.

The chain size is 16.9 X 24, that is the size of you were ordering new. They aren't sold by length and width other than people selling used chains. It would be most help if they could tell the tire size the chains were on.

You can do some math to figure out about the dimensions you need to look for.

Width of tire plus 4 to 6 inches on each side is a rough width.

Tire diameter minus 8 inches (4 for top and 4 for bottom to allow for where the side chain diameter will be) times 3.14 will give you a rough length.

Wider chains will come further down over the sides of the tires and can use a shorter length.

Find some for 16.9" wide tires. Most will be too long and can bhe easily shortened

I have a set that were on 11.2x24. They hung over the sides some, but do not know if they would or could be madw to work. Been laying around for 20 years. Cheap if would work. I am in central Michigan.

Good of you to offer them to him. It would take a good bit of work to make them fit and stay on. Even though they hung over the sides of your 11.2's, they are too narrow to start with (11.2 inch tire section compared to 16.9 inch tire section) to wrap down the sides of a 16.9 properly and would likely lead to a fight in keeping them on the tires They are also about 30 inches short comparing tire circumference (11.2 is about 126 inches and 16.9 is about 155 inches). Width and length both are at play for proper fit. Chain style can have an effect as well as there are differences in how different styles ride on the tire lugs.
