Tire Checking

Probably most of you have 'checks' in your rear tires. I may have a 'fix'. I was worried about sand/rocks getting into mine so, I bought a tube of Sikalex. It is a great product, stays flexible @ -40C and sticks like poop to a wool blanket. Anyhoo, I cleaned and filled the rears on my 60 and have finally put some distance on them - no failures and it is starting to blend (colorwise). A bit spendy, but what the hey. HTH

Bob , where did you purchase Sikalex? How do you prepare for applying?

On a similar topic, have any of you tried the tire paint from Miller Tire? It mixes with water and looks absolutely great - nothing at all like the tire paint used car dealers used to slather on their stuff. I like it, but it does NOT fill the cracks and checks.

Never heard of Sikalex. What is it? ANy body know?

Someone had suggested trying the 3M polyurethane caulking used to put in windshilds. I tried a tube a few years ago trying to save a tire with some cracks, but no help. It did not last through hay season before peeling loose.

Bob, which Sikalex worked best for you? I See they have several different compounds. Was it black? TY Pete

Sorry, should have given details. It is Black Sikaflex-291 (fast cure marine). Like anything else it needs a clean surface and reasonable temp. I've been using the stuff on boats for years. It will even replace Thiokol for teak decks. The only downside is you have to be VERY careful about sealing the un-used portion, because it will 'kick' if exposed to air. Haven't found any small tubes. In Can. available a Timbr-Mart. HTH

10,000 comedians out of work ................Glad you are finally getting some snow ! Hah, Hah. Nice sunny 8C's above here today.

Always wondered about painting the tire. Since tire checking is caused by sun light and oxygen, if you paint them wouldn't that make them last longer by protecting them from the environment?

Thanks Bob , I'll check it out(no pun intended)at Timber Mart tomorrow.
