tire patching cleaner

Its been a while since i patched a tube or tire. After buffing the tire where the patch goes, what is used to clean the silicone's from the tire. I cant remember what was used. Brake Kleen?

I've used starting fluid in the past. Currently I use one of the products they sell to clean and prep the rubber for patches. Truflate (Camel) Liquid Tire Buffer and cleaner and TECH Rub-o-Matic are a couple of those products. Most parts stores can get something for such a product from their tire repair line and a quart lasts a long time.

I don't use anything. Just use glue that is flammable. Set it a fire then blow it out then set it a fire again and again till it won't burn. Then put patch on. But can't let it burn but a few seconds a time.

time keeping it, as it seems no matter how tight I screw the cap on, it evaporates!

Guess I've been lucky so far, evaporation has been minimal. I keep a solid cap on mine and don't use the squirt nozzle.

Been years since I tried to do any tire work, when I tore up a rotator cuff and had to be operated on back in 2011 that was enough tire work for me. I was actually schedualed to see Dr first time the day I was operated on for 5 heart bypasses in june, got the shoulder fixed the next january. Did not gain full use of shoulder till next Febuary. So what is avaible now problbly was not avaible then. I never could find any cleaner so tried rubbing alchol, halfway worked. Was using a Harbor Freight at time tor the rotator cuff, last it was used. This was probly April of 2011.

When I buff them I try to do it so the debris is thrown away from the patch area as I do it then just apply glue sparingly then let dry to touch and apply patch roll down good and ready to use. No cleaner used. I also buff with a disc grinder touching tire or tube very gently. I have also used just the grinding wheel alone too.

I store my glue and cleaner in the shop refrigerator,seems to slow down the evaporation.

I use brake cleaner, scuff with a disc, brake clean again and let it fully dry. After dry I warm the area with a heat gun and apply glue, let glue dry put down patch and stitch it and then more glue on top. Never had one fail on me yet using this method for over 40 years.

The MSDS on Tech Rub-O-Matic says it is solvent, Naptha. My Rub-O Matic can is empty, so I am going to try some Mineral Spirits Paint Thinner) on the next tube I have to patch. It smells the same. Brake Cleaner should work okay too.

Not to change the topic, but I find this subject to be very interesting after a he**ish week with tire patches. What is the best tire/ tube patch to use,?. I apologise if I need to start a new thread.

Tubes, dunno its rare I patch one. I do my faire share of repairing tubeless tires from the inside I use Xtra seal Rubber prep # 14-100
