A tire distributor says i can't have R-1s on backhoe rears because of the weight. I currently have Chinese wing-wongs on the rear of my 655A which are breaking up the casing around the bars and cords are coming out, so it would seem the tire guy was accurate. However, in '86 it came from Ford with R-1 Armstrongs , and we ran those down to the inner tubes without incident.

Not crazy about R-4s, would like R-1s again and am willing to pay full price if I can get away without damage. Need more plies or what? Thanks Fritz
 
Your tire distributor doesn't know what he's talking about. You can run 8 ply-s if you want but you'll be a lot happier with 10-s. I'd go for a R1 pattern with more lug in the center (BKT & Firestone). Mimics the R4, gives you a R1, and won't wear out as fast as the traditional R1 (Titan).

They are often are r-4s as far as “CANNOT” you can do whatever you like if she fits

Also my sprayer has r-1 tread and it is much heavier. Backhoes sometimes go on peoples lawns though so I’m assuming he’s taking that into consideration

One of the positive points of my 655A is the ability to put "farm" tires on it. Good year R-1 with kind of a European style heavy center lug have been on it for years. I think they're 8 ply. I keep them well inflated. That's a lot of the key to keep sidewalls from giving out. They're starting to show their age. I seldom wear tires out on anything, they die of old age! So many TLB's have a special size tire which precludes using a farm tire. My TLB is a farm machine, it needs farm tires.
 
Not sure what you are looking for as far as size goes, but look at going with forestry tires, I don't think you can get as much weight on your backhoe as they would see on a skidder
 
R1 and R4 is the tread pattern and has nothing to do with how heavy the tire is. The ply rating is what dictates how heavy the tire is.
Although I have seen the treads rip on something like R2 when they are loaded heavy and get a big bite.
 
Backhoe in use puts the weight on the stabilizer legs. I understand there is a bit of wear and tear but mostly the rear tires are sitting around doing nothing on a backhoe.

Extra weight is from transporting while the backhoe is hanging off the back as dead weight. Which is like any loader tractor in the world with a rear weight to counterbalance the loader - all on regular ag tires.

So if ag tires fit on your rim, I can’t see why there is any issue. You want the right ply and quality to fit the workload.

I'm with thew consensus that ag tires will work if the rim/wheel is the right size and the ply rating is sufficient to hold up the load. Also look at radial tires .We had one on the grain crt till my brother put a cornhead nose through the side wall. The same 12 ply 24.5-32 was 8800 or something like that and the radial was 13,000 or close to that figure so a lot more load with the same ply rating on the tire. Sure do wish I had that rie back on there. Alass I think it is gone for good. The company that vulcanized it sold to another company and now don't know where it is. Was a 1000.00tire at the time and was only on for a few months. first season.
 
I don't know much about where to get the best tires. Bubba told me to rotate the air in my tires. Winter air has more density and I would get better traction.

I was told titan tires are junk compared to others. I was cheap and bought them anyway. The tire guy said the wouldn’t last. They didn’t. He told me the tread would come through and pinch the tube. That is exactly what happened in 5 years. I don’t put that many hours on my tractor but that was one time the tire guy was correct. He said he had seen so many do that. Something about the way they started making tires. Like everything else, make it cheap and cut corners

Im glad you said that cuz Titan was the very brand I was looking at...didn't they used to be Armstrong?

I don’t know what it used to be. These companies are buying each other out and changing so often I don’t know what is worth anything anymore. Seems to be a gamble no matter what a guy does.

Titan is what became of Goodyear ag tires. Any new Goodyear, are made by Titan.

I believe Armstrong was folded into Goodyear prior to Titan.

The manufacturers I have had good luck with are Michelin, Firestone, and BKT.
