Comfort King

Just got a Case 1030 comfort king tractor that I intend to restore. It has 23.1 x 30 rears on it that need to be replaced as well as the rims. Most of the pictures I have seen show the tire size to be 18.4 x 34. Tractor Data .com shows the 23.1 x 30 as one of the tire sizes that came with that tractor.
Should I consider changing my size or leave well enough alone.
Different size rims will require changing the mounts.
Don't know if that's a big deal or not?
Why would they offer the different size

Lots of tractors come with several different tire
sizes for different conditions and farmer
preference . Cost to change em over would depend
on whether you can find the other size rims . I
think I would leave the wide tires on it .

They look good with the 30 inch on there, if you change them you might have to change the centers as well.

My 1030 has 38"s and my 930 has 34"s. The rims on the 1030
are not Case, so you can see you can go taller by just getting
rims from a different breed of tractor that has the same size
axle. Oh yeah, the 1030 goes twice the speed of stink down
the road with these tires. Bruce

Leave it as is.Different requirements and ground
conditions require different tire sizes. Those 30"
tires are just fine.True, they are not the more
common 34",but they are factory original.

If I were in your shoes, I would price both options and go from there. The 23.1x30s will be more expensive than 18.4x34's or 38's, maybe enough to pay for the rims. Also what do you plan to do with the tractor? If you want to plow at old time plow days the 23.1 x 30's won't fit in a furrow well and you will need an on land plow, but 18.4's or even 16.9's will fit the furrow better. If it's just going to be a trailer queen, use whatever turns your crank. I think the wider tires were offered for people who don't need to plow, because they would give you a lot more traction pulling a cultivator or disc. Those of us who plow want duals when cultivating or discing to get more traction and flotation.

The castings are easy to get for the changeover. I
have the same issue with my 1030 and haven't
decided which way to go. The solid center will fit
from any 30 series case and I'm pretty sure the 70
series fit too. You don't need to change the hub.

Did the tractors with the 30" rims have a different final gear ratio as the ones with the taller rims? Is there a significant tire diameter size difference between the two that would affect ground speed? I think the gear ratios in the farmall "M"'s were different than in the W6's. If I heard right, the DC3 and the DC4 had different chain sprocket sizes to go along with different size tires.

23.1 30 tires are about the same diameter as a 18.4 34. Maybe a 1/2 inch shorter. Just much wider.
