Tisco Paint Quality

After seeing ppg paint prices for base coat, has anyone had good luck with tisco paint brand. I think it would fade fast and not have anywhere near the shine, or be able to see your self. has anyone wet sanded and buffed it before? Any info on how to spray it with high sine and low orange peal would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You for any help,
Chris

Chris,
I have used the Tisco paint on two different tractors in the past year. I was very pleased with the results. I had very limited experience spraying painting any thing before then. The finish turned out great for me with a very good high gloss. I didn't see any need to wet sand and rub or buff the finish. Like I said the finish had a very good shine. I didn't use any hardener in the past but am doing a NAA now and trying to get info on the hardener. I just followed the directions on the can, and used Naphtha for reducer as suggested. Both tractors finish has held up very well so far also. I have read on hear that a lot of them that are building a show tractor tend to use the higher end paint such as PPG.

Hi Chris;

Here's some costs for the PPG Omni line of paint using acrylic urethane which holds the shine better. Just to give you another option.

MTK -4A AU $25.27 qt.
MH 167 Fast Hardner $38.07 qt.
MR 185 Fast Reducer $21.28 gal.

MP 170 Epoxy primer $17.14 qt.
MP 175 Epoxy hardner $12.39
DX330 Acryli-clean wax and grease remover $10.10

If you must use Naphtha for reducer Then it is JUNK unless you never are going to be out in the Sun as it will turn colors. If it is in the shed and only comes out once and awhile it will just take long to change color.

chris, i have used the tisco paints and dont really have a problem with them. for the costs involved, you can get decent results, it will not be a super show car type finish like shooting diamont or glasurit paint lines, however you costs are very low with tisco compared to the high end paint. high end base/clear on a trctor, start to finish, you are gonna be around a grand in just materials, compared to maybe under a hundred dollars total for an alkyd enamel (like tisco). if you have a working tractor, and on a budget, and are looking to just spruce it up, tisco is fine. if you want a show tractor, go with a high line paint. to get a nice shine on the tisco, your first coat is a tack coat, just enough to get color on it. let it flash, then apply 1 or two more coats. your last coat needs to go on wet to get a good shine, its needs to be warm when you paint it. if its too cold out, its gonna run. the hardener helps a lot, valspar is the hardener for tisco. the paint does not have uv protectors in it, so if you leave the tractor outside all the time, its going to fade. if you shed it when you dont use it , it will last a long time. here are a couple pics of my 1942 m. it has tisco on it, was painted in 2000. it is a working tractor, not a trailer queen. the pic with the jd#5 was from this summer, yup, the tractor is dusty, but with a bath, it still has a good shine.
here is the tractor the first year it was painted

Thanks For all the help, It will be a show tractor but not sure if I want to spend the money. I will have to think about the choice.

Tisco paint will apply and hold up just as well as paint from a JD, CaseIH, Agco, or New Holland dealer, but not as well as the more expensive high line paints from an automotive paint suppliers. Again, it is a matter of how much you are wanting to spend, but if you were going to buy paint from your local dealer, Tisco paint is usually less expensive and just as good.
