Good moring,

I am trying to convert over to 12 volts. I have the block with the un-threaded TO30 bosses on it. the bracket will not bolt up due to bracket mount ear has a squared off spot cast into it. The other TO20 block has a rounded off ear at the bracket location.Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

It's not uncommon for the kit brackets to not fit.

You just have to get creative and make it fit or start over and make one that will.

But do make sure everything about it is right. The bracket must fit flat against the block so the bolts will tighten securely without being stressed.

The alternator needs to fit tightly between the pivot ears so when the bolt is tightened the ears pull tight against the alternator case.

Belt alignment is critical. Typically the supplied pulley is too narrow. Sometimes the old generator pulley will fit, or a wider pulley can be bought for the alternator. The belt needs to run at the proper depth of all the pulleys, so a thin belt will run too deep in the crank and water pump pulleys. The pulley needs to be right before determining the alignment. You probably won't find a belt as wide as the original. As long as it doesn't bottom in the pulleys before contacting the sides of the pulleys, or ride up and out of the alternator pulley, it will work.

The top bracket is easier, but it's a tight fit to not hit the belt or interfere with the governor arm. It needs just the right offset bend. Another reason to get the pulley right, that determines the final belt length.

Fabrication is your friend. I have done 2 at least and fabbed both lower mounts.
Look at the kit mount and go from there.

I was thinking I needed to make the slots on the mounting bracket longer, but I figured I would test the waters and see what everyone else said.

Thanks for your knowledge

I just converted my TO20 with the later block to 12 volt by changing the stock generator to 12 volt. There is a guy on eBay that sells the kits. It works great and looks unchanged from stock.

Here are a few pictures I took before I started working on my TO-20, so I could remember how things went back together.
A previous owner had done the 12-volt conversion, which included what looks like a homemade bracket. It works fine, and the cast bosses don't interfere with this setup. (I think I've seen a template for that bracket somewhere online, but I can't remember where.)

I found the 12 volt kit for the generator, do you remember what voltage regulator you used? Does the wiring stay the same except changin from positive ground to negative ground?

I just found a 4 terminal flat mount 12 volt negative ground regulator (the forum host sells them) wired it
in the exact same as the other one, swapped in a 12 volt battery and hooked the ground cable to the
negative post then swapped a 3 ohm 12 volt coil into the tractor so I wouldn?t need a resistor and it
works perfect..
