TO-20 update

In a previous thread I mentioned getting three piston rings for a four groove piston for my overhaul. I took them back and sure enough, their supplier had changed suppliers and yada yada yada, so they got me a whole new set....and it has a four groove piston with four rings; two compression, a one piece cast oil ring in the third groove, and a three piece oil ring in the fourth groove. They look good, but is this the normal configuration of what any of you have put in yours?

Depends on who makes the pistons and liners Irv, they do vary, they are not all the same unless you get them from MF and then they have to meet a certain spec. but even then you can't guarantee that they will be like the original ones....John

I'm sure that's so. I figure with the knowledge gained in the last 50 years by engine part makers and the materials available they should be better than the originals. And with a double set of oil rings on these, it surely shouldn't use oil! lol
I'm getting anxious to get it going again. Maybe this weekend. I've been tidying up everything that needs fixing hoping I'll have a dry machine when I get done.

I am sure it will be OK when you start it up, just get it tuned and timed properly as well and then allow the rings to bed-in. You are right about them learning a lot over the last 50 years or so, they just have to be better than the originals....John
