TO 30 12v conversion

When converting to the 12 volt system, I see ytmag has the kit but it doesn't look complete (coil, regulator,etc). Does the starter and gauges need to changed as well. Thanks, MJD

The original gauges did not have lights in them. If yours has lights and or you want lights you will need to get 12 volt bulbs. The starter does not need to be changed as it will work on the 12 volt system, however you do not want to have to grind on the starter very long as the 12 volt can and will burn out the 6v. starter if you do not get your tractor tuned so it starts easily. I know the archives will show many have changed to 12v several years ago and the starter is the same 6v one w/o modifications. You need to buy a 12v coil I believe the NAPA number is "SB 14" the ammeter wires will need to be turned around as the alternators are negative ground you need a 12v regulator. Also some of this depends on which type of alternator you get.

I used the kit from this site and the alternator does not require a regulator as it is built in. You will need a coil but I bout one of the nice oil filled ones from this site and it burned out within 2 months and I put the original 6 volt one back on and it has been on now for 1 1/2 yrs and works fine. As already stated the guages dont need replaced if they are original. Also as stated the starter is fine just be carefull to not crank the starter more than 10 seconds at the very most. Also there are Automotive Electric shops that re-build starters alternators etc and they can take your 6 volt starter and re-build it to a 12 volt within a day or 2 and it will be alot cheaper than buying one. I have already talked to my local shop and they are only gonna charge $55 to do mine when it finally does go.
