TO 30 Carb

I recently started some repairs including a new intake and exhaust manifold and planned on replacing the carb. I had bought a nice rebuilt carb on ebay a TSX458 which according to everything I have seen is correct for a TO 30. I had bought the intake/ exhaust manifold from this site. However the TSX 458 does not fit as the bolt pattern on the new or old manifold as it is not quite as wide. Actually the original carb doesnt look like the TSX either, it looks like the other one listed as new on this site. Although either one is supose to work on the TO 30. What is the problem, did someone put the TSX 458 tag on a different carb and rip me off or is there a different carb for different years of the TO 30.

Welcome to the world of old tractors. In actuality there are two carbs for the TO30 but the predomininat one is the TSX 458. There is a Carter carb that was used on the last models of the TO-30, but it has the same connect flange interface with the manifold as the TSX 458.

Do you have the carb that came with the tractor? How does it compare to your new carb? Does the old carb fit the new manifold? (I take it your old manifold was cracked or had rust holes in it so that"s why you are replacing it.) Most likely there are some Chinese knock off carbs out there and since they are made in the "land of almost right", they almost fit.
If your old carb fits the manifold, then why not rebild it? The M-S carbs on these tractors are the simplest things around and are easy to rebuild. The most important thing about carb rebuilds is to THROROUGHLY CLEAN THE CARB by soaking it for 24-48 hours in honest to goodness carb cleaner and blowing out all the passages til they are clear.
Send the other carb back since it doesn"t fit.

The old carb fits the new manifold anmd yeas the old manifold was in really bad shape and leaked at the rear exhaust port and extremely pitted everywhere else waiting for more leaks. I bought the new carb end of last year so unfortunately it is too late to send back. On the bottom of the carb it is cast in numbers saying 10A 355 but on the side of the carb is a brass tag that says TSX 458 5 53. Honestly I have done alot of work on this tractor, cars and trucks but have never rebuuilt a carb on anything so it is like greak to me. Also itappears to be an original carb that was rebuilt with skill and painted red and not a new chinese copy. The bolt pattern is just slightly narrower, maybe 1/8 to 3/16 narrower.

Thee is something fishy about a carb tagged a TSX 458 and not fitting the attchment interfac.e My guess is the bottom half of the carb is a the TSX458 part because that"s where the brass tag is located. The top half is, most likely, part of another M-S carb that fits on the TSX 458 fuel bowl.
Don"t be afraid to rebuild your old carb. It"s not a part from the Space Shuttlle! It"s a simple carb. Just clean it really really good. That"s the heart of a rebuild. If you really really don"t want to do it, get a hold of Gary Berkey (GBinMT) on the N forum . He rebuilds them and does a great job. Tell him Jerry/MT sent you.

Where do I get a rebuild kit as the original is the other (carter) style carb and the only kit I can find is for the TSX 458.

Try the www.carburetorshop.com. Does the Carter have a tag that ID"s the carb? You"ll need that to order the kit. I believe it"s something like 2201U.

Another thought. You might try contacting Gary Berkey (GBinMT) and see if he has a spare top he"d be willing to part with from a TSX for a Ford 2N, 9N,8N. That might fit the manifold since a lot of Ferguson and Ford N"s I believe had the same connect flange dimensions. If he does, you can replace the throtle assmblty that you have with one that will fit. The engine displacement for the N"s and the TO"s are very close so that carbs should work on your TO-30.

As you have learned, be careful of buying used parts on ebay.

Jerry, emailed me about yer delema, and from what I read in your post, It sounds like , the bowl with the TSX458 tag on it, has been swaped to an other TSX throttle body. Can be done, I have seen it on many carbs!!!
As you have stated....the problem with that is...if the top you have was a swap and was configured for a FORD flathead engine....the bolt flange holes will not mate to the TO30 manifold!!!!!
You said the carb had been painted RED??????? Dead givaway to have been config. for a Ford "N" series Tractor.........NOT, compatable with the TO30 Manifold.!!!!!
I think you bought a carb, that has been altered to fit a Ford.....Posibly a Ford 8N, or a Ford NAA/JUB.

Gotta watch buying things on FLEA-BAY!!! LOTs of unscrupulas sellers on there!!! :roll: AND some of them...do not really know what they are selling!!!

Eric,

Had the same problem. I have a TO20 and a Ford 9N. Turns out the Ferguson manifold mount is about 1/8" wider than the Ford.

When I went to working on my TO20 which should have a TSX361A Marvel Schebler, I found a TSX33.
The Ford should use that or a TSX241B. My Ford had a TSX33 but when I went to swapping them it wouldn't fit.

After much head scratching I found I had a TSX361A throttle body with a TSX33 bowl. I contacted Gary but he didn't have the part.

Took some searching but I now have a TSX361A body and bowl.

You could drill out the manifold just a bit and get your carb to fit. It's not much metal to remove.
