TO-30 HELP

I was installing a new alternator and replacing the old rotted wiring with new that came with the alternator kit. I ran into a big problem though. There is a starter switch bolted to the top of the tranny that the positive cable from the battery conects to and then another cable goes from the other stud on the switch to the starter motor. My major issue is one of the stud came loose from the switch which bascially leaves me with no other option than replacing it. My issue is this site doesnt sell the switch, they only carry the key operated or manual ignition starter switch on the dash but not the gear stick operated one on the top of the tranny. Does anyone know where to purchase one or how to rig it up. I greatly appreciate everyones help.

Eric, this site has the switch type in 181679M1 and the switch will come up.

That is a manual switch (no key) for the dashboard. not the starter switch on top of the tranny. Sparex has a online catalog showing some parts which clearly show a similar one only that specific one is for a TEA-20. This is the switch that is activated by the gear shift.

Eric if you was looking at #11 on Sparex then those other 2 I mentioned and this # 11 are all the same they are all the same number and that is what the parts book lists.

If you are removing the transmission housing starter switch, make sure you wire up the connecting link. Don't let the link fall down inside the bell housing.

Eric I replaced the tranny mounted switch with a standard starter switch from NAPA. I took the old one in and got an exact match, it just sits in the mounting upside down. Works same as the old one. jd

I am not sure what you are refering to a connecting link as I have not took it apart yet and have never done one of these before. I ould appreciate anyones help with input that has done one before.

Here is a view of the starter switch being pulled off. You will need to put a string on the action lever to keep it from dropping into the transmission... as shown. It really is no big deal. Once you have the string on the lever, carefully remove the cotter pin retainer, and pull the pin at the rocker arm... careful not to drop the pin into the clutch housing.

See that rocker... it is what pushes the button.

Here is the starter switch you need. They are available from this site for $12.74. They are probally also available at a local Tractor supply, though may need to be special ordered.

The Push button mounts into the tractor with the button inside the tractor and the terminals sticking straight up. See the lower post for a view of the rocker arm mechinism that pushes the button.

The TEA and TO-20 were different. Yes that Sparex switch is for the TE-20 and TEA-20 tractors. The Push button id for the TO-20's (in the bell housing)

I am convinced that it is the right part and ordered one last night. I am a little confused though as the piture you had showing the original being lifted up as I dont see the button and what I do see is the arm assembly and how it connects viat a clevis pin and cotter pin. On the other replacement switch there is the button but not sure how it will conect to the rocker arm assembly.

The picture of the switch installed on the tractor is from a TE-20 not a TO-20. Thus it is not the same switch. The internal mechinism (levers and rockers) are the same. That picture was to illistrate where to tie the string that was being discussed. The button in your case would be hidden behind the rocker arm support flanges.

OK anyone wanting to replace a starter switch on a TO 30 it is very simple. Remove the cables from the 2 upright studs, take out 2 bolts that have 7/16" heads, then grab the 2 bolts that cables were attached to and lift switch out. Put new switch in place install the 2 bolts, then reattach the cables to the switch. You don't have to worry about dropping the link into the clutch housing as you won't get that far involved. Probably about 1/2 hour job if you have to remove as much grease and crap that was on mine. If yours is clean and in no hurry maybe 20 minutes. Richard
