to-35 diesel wont start

i have a to-35 with standard diesel motor and it has been starting fine with alittle help from starting fluid but now it will not start at all with anything .it is getting diesel to everything that should have diesel, but still wont start. i have charged the battery and everything else but just won't start .anybody got any ideas would be great help thank you

If you have been using starting fluid, it may be addicted to it and will not start at all. If the engine is steaming out of the pipe down right side of block that is OK but if it is blowing hard, that is not a good sign. Check the Thermostart (heater) in the inlet manifold, is it working or not. Hold the key on heat for about 30-50 seconds and feel the inlet manifold where the heater is, it should be at least warm, if it isn't the Heater needs changing, it will never start if the heaters do not work. You can start it by towing, but that isn't always advisable. Always use 3rd gear in High when you tow it. It can also mean the the Injection Pump timing is out due to wear, this engine is very particular about injection timing. Are you sure that the injectors do have diesel up to them, they should all drip when you slacken off the nuts on the pipes, if there is no fuel up to them, remove the adapter that fits into the rear of the pump with the main fuel line, there is a filter in there that can block up if you diesel is not clean and your filters are not changed regularly...John

Diesel"s need fuel at the right time and compression to start. You have the fuel, how about the timing and the compression?

Its a called a Thermostart, which has nothing to do with the Thermostat. It's a heater plug in the inlet manifold that when heated will burst into flame as it is fed fuel from the main tank via a small reservoir on the back of the main tank. From how you describe it and the lack of even trying to fire up, I think that the Easy Start has been overdone over a period of time and you may find that you will no longer be able to start it in the conventional way any longer. All you can do is check the following:- 1)Make sure that the Starter is turning over at the correct speed and that it isn't running too slow as this engine needs to be turned over very fast to get it to fire up when there is any wear on it. That is why it will probably start up if you tow it. 2)Make sure that the battery (or batteries) is big enough capacity, batteries that are too small will not start this engine, they just do not have enough "oomph" to get it going.
3)It is also possible that the injectors are not spraying as they should, there is a small hole that only operates to start it, this sprays directly into the combustion chamber, and these holes do tend to get blocked over time and then you are trying to start the engine just on the main injector which goes straight into the cylinder. You should remove the injectors and then attach an injector to one of the pipes and turn the engine over with the stop control in, as for running, and see if it sprays out from the two holes and if it also sprays in a very fine mist NOT a thin jet spray. It should spray out in a conical pattern in a very fine mist, the finer the better, if they don't do this you should have them serviced and reset to correct pressure.
When testing the injectors keep well away from the spray and the injectors with any part of the body as it can pass through the skin. When removing the Injectors, you should always use TWO wrenches when unfastening the Leak-off pipes, one to unfasten the nut on the pipe and one to hold the adapter that screws into the Injector, if you don't do this you may find that you twist the pipe off just at the back of the nut.

Some tractors have a different heater system and they have one heater plug for each cylinder, they fit immediately below the injector and they go straight into the combustion chamber. If one heater plug has a fault then they ALL stop working....John

Using starting fluid causes premature wear to piston rings and sleeves. Each time we use starting fluid it causes little wear and compression is lower and lower. These engines need at least 400 PSI @ 70ºF to start normally.

Water in the fuel is the most damageable it will cause rust or/and jam injector and injector pump moving parts. Premium diesel fuel and good clean fuel filters will help.

We have an old 4cy Ferguson 35 diesel since new it still running..but for years we plug the engine block heater and battery charger 2 hours prior to use it. We can stop it and it will restart without aid if engine is still warm.

Good luck
