TO 35 running hot

Just recently rebuilt continental 134 engine with new radiator, good water pump and thermostat replaced with 160 degree unit still seems to run hotter than it should. I never had a real temp gauge before this rebuild, just the stock one with white and red markings, so don't really know how hot it used to run but now shows 180 pretty quickly and when bush hogging tall grass gets to 220 but never seem to boil over. Has no leaks and runs well. Timing is perfect. Oil pressure stays above 30 psi. Engine was hot tanked and totally rebuilt--new pistons/jugs, bearings, etc. What am I missing?

Have you checked the temp at the gauge sensor location with a temp gun? The gauge might be off scale.

I don't have a temp gun but do have a stick type touch temp reader so I will check that. The gauge I installed is new and is the mechanical type I thought were rather reliable but I know better than to assume that. Your point is well taken.

A hard load and a lean carburetor caused over heating for me on a fresh overhauled 65.

Sometimes on some engines the fan can be assembled backwards. Air still flows the correct direction but just not as much air.

Did your Tractor from the FACTORY have a SHROUD on the aft side of the Radiator?

Makes a big difference on volume of AIR flow through radiator...
How many CORES / cooling Tubes did the old radiator have ?
How many cores / cooling tubes does the new radiator have.?

You say the timing is perfect, but does the distributor mechanical advance work as it should? If it does not advance as engine speeds up THAT will make it run hot too.
Have seen that several times at the MF dealer I worked for years ago.

hank you for your response (and to all others as well). I have no idea if this unit had a shroud when new but perhaps I could fashion one. The new radiator seems identical to the one it replaced.

My distributor seems to work properly by I have not used a timing gun and degree tape to confirm exactly how much advance is provided. My shop manual doesn't show specs for total advance, however, the engine runs strong and pulls great.
