to20 really loud

I just bought a new to me to20 and it is really loud. the engine was rebuilt about 3 years ago and when he did that he put a new manifold on it and then last year he put a brand new exhaust pipe on it. at least he said he put a brand new exhaust pipe on it. it looks fine to me but it's insanely loud. like to the point where I almost have to wear ear protection when driving it. I had a to 35 that was pretty loud too not quite this loud. are fergusons just that loud or is there something wrong?

Does it have a muffler or just an exhaust pipe? Without a muffler it will be loud. If there's a hole in the exhaust it will also be louder.

We had a TE20 growing up. I don't recall it being any louder than any other tractor of similar size. Had a neighbor with a small Ford, not sure which one exactly, but our Ferguson was no louder than his Ford.
Got a picture of the tractor showing the exhaust and muffler? Some mufflers are louder than others.

That appears to be an OEM type 1-piece exhaust pipe assy. https://antique-tractor-parts.external_link/tractor/Ferguson-To20-Muffler.
I suspect a leaking exhaust manifold.

The thing is when I go up and put my head close to the manifold area it's not that loud. It don't sound like it's got a leak. It's only loud when I'm sitting on the tractor right above the muffler or when i am standing behind the tractor where the exhaust is blowing.

It seems like the under and back exhaust was a bit louder but my memory fails me. I know my right foot got warm in the summer. My TE-20 has the aftermarket vertical exhaust/muffler and it's not excessively loud. Just looking at the picture is there clearance of the foot plate to the rear of the muffler? If not, that could make it louder and maybe it wore a hole in it.

My money is on , it is a loud muffler, I have had 2 that were loud. Both were exhaust pipe muffler and tail pipe one piece assemblies.

Is that he same muffler that's used for the N series? It's been a while since I had my 8N, but the muffler in the pics above looks like it's a smaller diameter. Maybe by an inch or two.

It looks like the tail pipe is strait out. You might shine a light in there and see if it is just an open chamber or if there is some baffling to cut down the noise. I had an open chamber Thrush muffler on my '68 Dodge and it was loud!

My thoughts as well. That looks like a loud muffler to me.

I have an underslung muffler on my case 300 and it was louder than I liked. I ended cutting the end of the muffler tube off and welding it back on at about a 45 degree angle so the exhaust and noise exited down towards the ground. It seemed to improve the noise quality and keep me from getting blasted in the face when hooking up to things. The down side is that if you are in a shed with "moon dust" then it can kick that up into the air if you really goose the throttle. This has not really happened to me. At least not enough that I have cared. The picture isnt great but you can see the end of my muffler is pointed down.
