To35 info needed

Hello,

I am new to the Ferguson tractors. I just purchased a Ferguson TO 35 w/ a 4 cylinder diesel for $2,ooo. It runs very well and in good looking shape. The serial number plate reads Massey Harris Ferguson TO 35 serial number SGF 174581. Is the serial number plate correct? First I ask because doesn"t the middle letter G stand for Gas? Also the serial number chart reads it is a 1957. The paint colors on this are red and grey and I read that scheme did not start until 1958. Also there is a gear shifter that has Reverse and 1 through 3 and the other shifter the has a high low range. Is this a "dual stage" transmission? Last question I promise, the PTO lever has a "Engine" run PTO position and a "Ground" run position. Why the 2 positions?

Was this tractor a good buy for $2,000.

You have a merger tractor thats alittle bit of everything I have about the same year. My tractor says Ferguson on it buy my manual says Massey ferguson TO-35. If you look at various parts some will say MF of HF. The trans is a 3 speed with reverse and high and low range.

The PTO is a live PTO. Engine mode it will run as fast as you have the idle set and ground will only go as fast as the tire. If you use a mower use engine.

The clutch is dual push half way kills trans all the way kills trans and PTO.

Well, assuming everything runs fine then I would say $2,000 is a good price. Your serial number is correct. The later year tractors get confusing trying to figure out soem of the information because as mentioned the crossing over between fergusson, and Massey Harris. Which is why your tractor is red and gray and not all gray like most of the fergusons are. Hope this helps.

If your tractor was originally at 4-cylinder Standard Diesel, equipped as you describe, the SN prefix should be "SDM." it is possible someone switched the engine or switched the SN plate. It is highly unlikely that the SN plate was wrong when it left the factory.

I echo what Paul and the other posters said. To elaborate, you are correct the middle letter should be D if it was orginally a diesel, but also the last letter of F reflects a non-live PTO setup. If you have live PTO, as mentioned by Tony with ability to push clutch half way to stop tractor but leave PTO turning, then the last letter should normally be M. You didn't say if it had live PTO or not, so the F could be correct. As for color, they were often repainted with the red and silver, even if they were something else originally. It is possible the whole dash and steering might have been replaced and they didn't bother to exchange the serial plate.
