TO35 Rear main seal

I have a 1958 TO35 with gasoline engine and single stage clutch. Oil started coming out of the starter a couple weeks ago and after reading some posts on here I figured out that the rear main seal was leaking and the flywheel was splashing oil up into the starter. I removed the inspection cover and, sure enough, about a pint of oil came flowing out. I have ran the tractor without the inspection cover in place and it is leaking quite a bit. I have to add oil to the tractor about every half hour or so of use and every time I stop the tractor leaves a puddle of oil where it sits. Now, my question, if I split the tractor and remove the oil pan can I replace the rear main seal from there or do I have to remove the crank? Splitting the tractor is not really that daunting to me, but are there any major pitfalls I need to watch for? Any tips or instructions anybody has in doing this? I appreciate the help tremendously!

Sorry to hear about your leak. I had a similiar problem with my TO 30. You do not need to remove the crank. Good news. You do have two small bolts on the inside of the rear of the engine that hold the bottom of the rear seal retainer though.

I believe all you need to purchase is a seal kit and an oil pan gasket. The seal kit has the front seal too and gasket, put them on the shelf for later.

This is not a bad job to tackle just a pain in the but to split the tractor.

If it is coming out the back of the engine I would suspect the seal failed too. If you have to split the tractor its is a great time to inspect the clutch and pilot bearing too.
