When I was a kid growing up on a farm in the 60's I always had a good tan by May after a couple of sunburns and tan lines right at the end of the short sleeve shirt and on my wrist from a watch. Dad was the same way except he didn't wear a watch. We never went shirtless so that's where the tan stopped. No cabs on any tractors we owned. Knowing what we know about skin cancer these days I'm glad I never went shirtless.

When we were kids, the darker your tan the better...almost always shirtless, but we rarely wore shorts. The sun does feel stronger now, though.

Always dealt with that. Also had the trucker's tan on the left arm where the left elbow was sitting on the window edge. When I was drilling in the middle east I just wore a pair of cut off jean shorts and wellington boots except when we were moving the rig, rigging up, and tearing down. Climbing around on the BOP stack (blowout preventers) will cut skin fairly quick.

When I was in my 20s-40s building houses I NEVER wore a shirt. Then my dad got skin cancer & I started rethinking things. Now I wear short sleeved shirts but still no hat.

When I had my mail route my tan was always on the RIGHT arm from driving on the wrong side of the seat. Used to get a few comments on that once in a while.

I never wore a cap or hat until a guy I worked with got melanoma on the head. They had to peel his scalp back and remove all of it. Now I ware a cap in the winter and a western hat in the summer.

I've had to have a bunch of growths removed from the tops of my ears over the years so I finally gave in and bought a hat with flaps on it to cover my ears and the back of my neck. I've worn those hats for about four years and it has dramatically reduced the sun damage to my ears.

My son calls them my French Foreign Legion hats. I'm glad to use them.

I just got back today from the skin doctor, and had a couple samples taken, and some burned off my face, and head. One showed up where the sun rarely shines. I get a check up every 6-8 months. Stan

That reminds me of a story dad told me. He owned a garage and worked on tractors as much as trucks and cars. He went on a service call, and the lady of the farm was cultivating beans when dad got to the field he was told to go to,he set in the truck and waited for her to finish her trip across the field, and pick up her clothes from the fence post.
