Finally got a job done today I was dreading. Had to R/R the ring and pinion gear in my 50 8N. Got a good used set from John Smith, complete differential and main bevel gear assembly. I knew the ring was shedding teeth, found the pieces in the bottom of the center housing when I was replacing the PTO seal recently. What I didn't know was how bad the pinion was. Here's what I saw when I removed the differential.
Woof! Not much time left for this one. Here's what the ring gear looked like.
I dreaded doing it because of splitting between the tranny and center housing. It wasn't nearly as bad as I figured it to be. Still a job by yourself, but totally doable. Started it by pulling the tractor in the barn, draining the housings, pulling the pump, top cover, and PTO. Left it set to drain all night. Began today by pulling the left axle housing. It was a good idea to pull the axle and brake assembly. Reassembly would have been a booger with all that weight. Still a snag when trying to get the trumpet back on, the differential was drooping enough it wouldn't mate in the bearing cup. A length of #12 copper held it up enough to assemble. The split itself was quicker than the differential tear down. Went back together pretty good too. Also had to replace the O-ring and backup washer on the ram piston. With all the metal chips floating around in the oil, some of the smaller ones must have ate the washer up. Just a small piece of it left. Testing it out this evening, the rear end is quiet, and the pump is quiet, and smooth. Now next on the hit parade, those X#!!* spindle bushings. Mark
