TOH and Bruce VA Just answer the ?

First Bruce, I have no Oil Analysis. I just have a fine running 43 2N ----your grasping at straws now. So again I ask, what oil was used in the 1939,40,41,42,43,and 44 Ford N series tractors. Tip 76 when lost for answers be like NASA-- Never A Straight Answer.

Not TOH or Bruce, but just look at old owner's manuals & they tell you"
SAE30 summer
SAE20 winter
SAE10 when below 10*F
There you have it! Happy now?

A straight base oil whodathunkit.

The viscosity of motor oil is indicated by two numbers, for example 5W-30. The first number with the "W" stands for the low-temperature viscosity (how fluid the oil is at low temperatures). The second number represents the high-temperature viscosity (how fluid the oil is at high temperatures). The following applies to both numbers: The higher it is, the more viscous (thicker the oil), and vice versa: The lower the number is, the thinner the oil.

Motor oils consist of two main components:

The base oil
The additive packages

The base oil (the actual oil) is then hardly more than just a carrier fluid for the additive packages. Almost a third of modern oils consists of additive packages.

I answered your question.

And I also explained that [b:09e08de300][u:09e08de300]TODAY's[/u:09e08de300][/b:09e08de300] non-detergent "engine" oils ARE NOT actually formulated for use in automobile engines. [b:09e08de300]There is no actual market for a non-detergent engine oil[/b:09e08de300] so they are formulated for use in air compressors and hydraulic systems. The Valvoline label for example is pretty clear on what application it is actually made for and what performance specifications it is tested against. Hint - they aint engine oil specifications..

Can these air compressor/hydraulic oil formulations be used in an N engine - sure. You could even try a little universal tractor transmission or gear oil - the old L-head will tolerate a lot.

But why do any of that when you can use any of the thousands of engine oils that are actually formulated for use in internal combustion engines and infinetely better for the old tractor?

ou are shooting way too high. He seems to be looking for simple answer such as, "it is a slick greasy like petroleum product that is difficult to wash off hands & clothes".

Nah - just demonstarting once again that he is a willfully ignorant a$$hole with low esteem that likes to hear himself talk.

TOH

Your questions were answered by me, TOH ( twice) and JMOR as well as the email I attached from the American Petroleum Institute.

You either do not understand the answers, are incapable of understanding them, or have chosen not to understand them.

But you do have factual answers.

As Thomas Paine said :

To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.

means I can use 10W30 all year long and be happy as a pup in a basket of clean laundry ?????????????????????????????????

Thats exactly what it means.

some folks gotta overcomplicate everything.

when buying oil, for a modern car or an old tractor, trust Old Hokie brand motor oils. Look for the Hokie on the label. don't see it? don't buy it. NUF SED.

Hokie, you reminded me of a gag I really wanted to try back in the early 2000s.
I have a friend that had a P-51 Mustang.
If I were to collect the used motor oil, bottle it in qt jugs and custom labels and sell it on e-bay with a flashy label that said, "This Motor Oil Ran in a P-51 Mustang".
Do you suppose someone would get all excited about it?
I'll bet every bottle would sell immediately.
There's one born every day....
Never got around to it and the plane sold.

I still use 30W non detergent oil in my tractor.
Must be 8/10 years ago I was given an unopened 2 gallon jug of the stuff. I didnt want it and tried to refuse it but ended up taking it - to be kind - to an old guy who knew I had tractors and assured me this was the good stuff. Co Op brand.
It mostly sat there though I used it in my squirt cans.
Then one time I changed the oil in the tractor and forgot to buy enough 15W40 for the engine And the oil bath air filter.
So I use the ND stuff for that. Only change the oil every couple of years.
It's about gone now - the rest will go in the squirt cans but till I change oil in the filter again I'm still running that oil and it has served me well.
:)
I see the oil debate much as I see the voltage debate.
The newer stuff is better.

unless you're talking about music, i tend to agree.
