Hi all-

I think I have an air leak on the intake side of my '45 2n 12v. My
attention was alerted when I noticed the engine wouldn't change
speed when I tweeked the side facing screw on the carb during my annual Spring Tractor Maintainance event. I've
also noticed some other stuff like it running better with the
choke a little out, an occasional backfire (both new this spring)
and it doesn't start like previously in this kind of weather. All this
leads me to believe (hopefully correctly) that the engine is
pulling air from somewhere else than thru the air cleaner.
Anyway, that's where I think I should start. Can someone suggest
an effective diagnostic for checking this out?

thanks,
pete

Get a hand-held propane tank & spray it around the manifold, carb, etc.

If the engine speeds up, you found the problem.

If it doesn't, time to pull the carb for a good cleaning/rebuild. (as in throttle bushings, the most likely source of an air leak)

Unlit torch naturally.

too add to the torch advice.. I'll say that once you are decently above idle.. you probably wo't see the idle air needle doing much.

if a propane torch makes a diff, here's a double check.. or use it as first check.

handfull of grease. rub on gaskets and at throttle shaft packings...

could be just leam main jet or dirty carb.
