found this in my not sure what was used for any guesses? seven inches x 3.5 inches

A saw set is used to bend the teeth of saw blades left and right to create a kerf (Saw cutting width) that allows the saw structure "back" to move through the work without touching either side. Setting a saw is necessary every few times it is sharpened. The shown tool is used mostly on hand saws, other methods and tools are used on circular and power saw blades. Jim
 
Thanks for the quick answers. My dad always used a hand saw never a power saw. Always wondered how kept them in shape.
 
ChuckMA: while you're looking around, see if there's any small triangular files with the saw set. There's a good chance they're saw sharpening files, and, like many such tools, it can be difficult to find good ones nowadays, as most hand saws are meant as throw-aways, not tools to be re-sharpened multiple times.
