Dad and i tore into the 48 8n this weekend. pulled top cover and found out it had the 3 ring piston and lift cylinder was scored real bad, have a new one on order, we also got the naa piston for her. the cam follower pin is worn and we have Zane's jig and pin on the way too.

We did get lucky and the pto shaft slid right out and we will drop the pump and look it over some time this week. it was not that dirty in there as we did a quick clean when we got it, but have some diesel soaking in the bottom till we pull the pump out.

I will try to get some pics on here as this is the first time i will have tried it :-) hope you like them, i took them with my phone. so not that great.

also, the painted parts are the ones we have taken off while working on her so some day we should have it looking good :-)

All that hard work and ya gonna haft arse the job (quick clean),,, what a shame,,, what do you spec scored the lift cylinder up ,,,what ya don't get is still down their,,, looking for a nice new lift cylinder to fudge up,,, how much work would it b to drop the pump and get pert near all of the crud out,,, the extra work is nuttin to what Y'all have already done,,, go for the kill (looks like you have the ability) theirs nuttin quick that will clean ,,, it takes elbow grease...

all that's left is drop the pump,,, if yer skeered of the pump controls and valves (nuttin to'em) at least make sure you clean out the junk in the sump of the pump and the areas around the pump the so called quick clean will not touch (takes dropping the pump),,, theirs nuttin quick and clean about it,,, some of my friends recommend this (quick clean) and they are DEAD WRONG,,, its a waist of time a fools time if he expects 60 years of crud to give up EZ and quick

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

hobo,

we did the quick clean when we got the tractor almost 2 years ago. Yes, now that we have her apart we will drop the pump and clean it right. looking in we saw what might be some scoring on some of the pistons, so it will come apart this week and every thing will be looked over and replaced if needed and cleaned right proper. we do not want to have to go back in for a long time :-)

It did not look like this job intimidated y'all

If the pump was working OK removal of the valve chambers is not necessary,,, nor the valves in the chambers but it is a simple job your call.

For sure remove the control valve and tilt the front of the pump up and run cleaning fluid into the hydraulic discharge near the test port,,, make sure you get a good flow out the small hole in the side of the pump were the control valve fits,,, make sure its not partially stopped up,,, with the control valve pushed in fluid should not leak from the test port hole and when the control valve is removed it should dump the fluid,,, if you get the pump high enuff you can see this while running the cleaning fluid into the test port..

If you jack the rear of the tractor up 6 to 8" it will make removal and assembly EZ'er,,,, Zane's adjust/jig,,, nail the first adjustment (draft) and the other adjustments will B a piece of cake,,, if you do not need to add the trick washer for the draft DON'T,,, if you do, DO,,, if not needed it will make it worst,,, not better,,, if needed it will make it better,,, you will read about this when you get the instructions,,

When all in all done and testing do not stand at the back of the tractor and work the lift,,, the end of the PTO shaft will take on all comers,,,,good luck

Do you soak the pump after it's out? I might be wasting my time, but I drop it in a bucket of diesel fuel & let it soak for a day or so.

I'll have another one out in the next few days, so any more pointers would be nice! (yea, no more quick clean for this guy either!)

I wash and scrub the pump in a parts washer,,, remove the control valve and confirm the exhaust circuit is open and with the control valve installed the feed side (discharge side ) of the circuit will hold cleaner fluid,,, then i remove the safety valve and flush all that clean and flush the intake side of the valve,,,, not all of the time do i remove the valves in the pump chambers,,, I have never seen crud form in them but its EZ to remove the valves to flush the intake side out

The control side packs crude in their,,, I spec its the exhaust return side,,, stays closed most of the time,,, has very little room to dump deposits,,, I spec crud will not stay put on the intake pressure side
as the constant pressure forces the crud thru the hydraulic circuit till it finds a resting place at the exhaust port.

If you have a lift that will not lower its a stuck control valve,,, trash sticks it,,, I did have one newly rebuilt pump stick one time that's why I state you may never get all the trash out...

I think you are going to find this is a simple job and if you have the pump out staring you down and as close as you will ever get to it then it only makes sense to confirm the circuits are clean,,,, I don't understand the theory behind the dip in a bucket of diesel,,, you are so close why bubba the job up now...

I do understand if you are charging $25 hr then doing the job twice pays twice  ,,, that's why its not about how much you are charged for a hours work its what you get for a hours work

Great info, thanks!

I do clean it up & blow out the passages w/ the air gun after a good soak, so I only get credit for doing a half-Bubba job! I didn't know exactly what passages to pay attention to!

Thanks again.
