Hey all, I'm new here so hopefully this is the section for this topic, it's like restoration work. I have lots of things to discuss but the issue I've stumbled onto most recently is torque specs for main and rod caps.
I have a JD 1630 with the 3-179D engine. Going to swap some bearings, and as I go through the process I naturally look up the torque specs. In the tech manual, it shows the crank main caps at 110 ft. lbs. The online bearing suppliers, from several different sources, show main caps torque to 85 lbs.
Similarly, tech manual shows rod bolts with the range of "60 to 70 ft. lbs." The internet suppliers say 52 lbs for black bolts, 63 lbs for silver bolts. (I have black bolts, new)
So, what do you follow? Before the internet there were a lot of bolts tightened based on the manual, even if a typo. Is there a reason for this discrepancy, did we learn something about main bolts/caps since the early 70s?
Even the 10 lb range for rods in the tech manual seems unusual. I figure best bet is aim for 60 and move on. The main caps though, 85 to 110, seems quite the difference. Any thoughts or rules of thumb for this situation? Thanks
