tough 340 question

I feel stupid asking this question but need some ideas. What is the approx. cost to have a 340 (C135) gas head rebuilt. I know that there are many factors I am just looking for a rough idea so I can plan ahead.

I had a head done for a 504 gas utility (153ci)a couple years ago it was over $400 by the time it was done.

Here are what it cost me to have that job done (12 years ago) at a machine shop in the Baltimore, MD area. I realize you'll have to adjust for cost increases due to time, and also if more valves have to be replaced.

1 Exhaust valve $7.70
8 Valve Guides $22.48
Labor for valve job & to install valve guides $147.00

Did a major on it; parts total for sleeve assemblies, bearings, gaskets, exhaust valve, valve guides, cam gear, crank gear was $690.16.

Labor to install cam bearings, pistons, sleeves, check line bore, resize rods & align, grind crank 010/010 do headwork and assemble short block was $684.00

The guy in the machine shop was impressed at the condition of the valves & that only one had to be replaced.

Thanks for all the info. I am concerned as I am spraying a little oil from the exhaust upon startup. I assume....that would be the rings but will not know until I do a compression test and get in there. I want to do it once and do it right so I can put a good paint job on it and not have to tear into it in a couple years.

Here in eastern WV its between 3-4 hundred.Around here its getting harder to find machine shopes that will work on tractor heads
