Tower Hose Clamps

I was curious about the tower hose clamps that were used on the letter series tractors. Specifically, I am wondering about my 54 Super H. It had newer hose clamps on it, but I have some of the tower hose clamps off of some of my other tractors I kept and assumed those were used on the air cleaner hose to the carb and at the top of the air cleaner J pipe. Were those original on these tractors, the Super Hs specifically? Thanks all!

Yes they were more or less the originals but why would they be any better than just using the worm drive stainless clamps that are so prevalent in use. I never thought much of those tower clamps as you call them the bolts would tip over sideways while loosening or tightening.

If you ever find yourself needing to harvest these clamps off of something else, you can remove them easily without damaging them if you use a deep socket, or piece of pipe over the bolt to tap on the square shoulder of the clamp. They will release instantly. Tapping on the head of the bolt can work, but most of the time it just ruins them. It breaks off the little tabs holding the nut in the shoulder; they are not meant to take the force of hammering the clamp loose. The reason they are not more widely used is because they have a fraction of the range of a worm drive clamp, necessitating the need for a different clamp for each size of hose; plus worm drives are used in numerous non- hose, non- round situations. Tower clamps cant do that. They are pretty cool looking when cleaned up and painted, and have the same gripping power as worm drive clamps.

JIM - To Me, ABSOLUTE servicability takes precedence over originality, EVERYTHING on my Super H & Dad's '51 M has worm gear hose clamps. Even the Quarter Inch fuel lines on my Cub Cadets get worm gear hose clamps.
I have found a distributor for Donaldson 2-stage dry type air cleaners to replace the messy inefficient oil bath air cleaners common on old equipment like my M & SH. The Donaldson's publish 99.95% dust removed, I've NEVER seen an oil bath rated over 95%.
The 27 hp Kawasaki engine on my Cub Cadet zero turn has a 2-stage Donaldson air cleaner, works great! And the 2-stage air cleaners are amazingly economical for how effective they are. Every spring I install a new outer primary filter, Parts guy at my dealer says next spring I can just replace the secondary filter after 9 years.
