tractor chains for snow removal??

They make a big difference. That said, I find them a pain to put on and take off. I get the work done just fine without them.

Chains are a definitely needed for serious snow removal work.
Be cautious on ice....chains, especially high profile ones like the double ring style will "skate" on very hard thick ice.
I "chain up" at the beginning of winter every year.

Last spring I began looking for a front snow blade for
this 1980 John Deere 1050 tractor. The part I needed
was a JD423 utility blade. Couldnt find one. Someone
recommended a Western Pickup truck straight 7.5
foot blade. So I recently mounted that on the front,
hydraulic left-right and up-down and with a set of big
skidder chains it works great! Thanks for the advice!

Now with the front snow blade and big chains Ive got another issue requiring good advice. The SCV hydraulic controller, sometimes called a multiplyer, is giving me problems. I took it apart and finding parts is tough. A new one is 2K. Anyone know an aftermarket replacement?

You would do well to start a post of your own, on this totally different issue, not have it buried in a post about tire chains. Give all the details of what you have and the problem(s). And to be clear, are you running the plow functions from the tractor SCVs, where remote hoses would attach, or are you using the Western plow control valves.

Dad had chains, the big twisted link, on the H with a narrow front and a dirt scoop narrow bucket for snow removal. Trip bucket.

Boy oh boy....... !

We did a Ford 960 with chains and a rear blade for a few years. It was faster until tge snow got piled high then not much mattered.

I got a snow blower and no chains, oh life is so much better. If you hit deep snow and spin you can make ice under the tires and about helpless, but not too hard to get around that. Really dont want too much traction with the blower, just busts the blower then.

We had chains on the Ford 4000 with 13.6x38 tires loaded with caci and 2 cast weights per wheel, not a light weight tractor, and would still be spinning the wheels as we were trying move snow over 200 feet to pile as high as loader would reach using a 7 foot snow bucket to clear barnyard out so we could get around. This is northwest Ohio

Almost necessary on a 2wd loader tractor.

Good on a 2wd with no loader & 3pt blower or blade.

Not absolutely needed on a 4x4, but you would nearly be unstoppable if you have them.

They are a good way to ruin fenders etc and not road speed friendly. Go SLOW with them.

if it's 2 WD you need em. Live in central WI and 10 years ago I got a 4WD machine and have never had chains on it.
