My 180 Massey has a new oil gauge that don't work. It shows empty. What do I need to do to know if it is the gauge or the float mechanism?

Do you mean oil pressure gauge, or fuel level gauge?

You can check the fuel tank sending unit by checking the ohms resistance on the sending unit in the tank then see if the readings match the specs in the service manual

Gauge is tested by GROUNDING the sending unit wire with engine running, so oil pressure switch will put 12V to the gauge terminal. Gauge SHOUD read full with sending wire grounded. Most trouble is the sending unit in the tank, either the float or rheostat is bad..
