Tractor gears

If a tractor pops out of gear occasionally what can this signify? Any comments appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Happens with new gears and worn ones. Once it starts doing it there isn't much you can do to stop it other than making something to hold it in place. Probably from worn bearings or shafts but have had it happen even when they are rebuilt. Could see if you can make the detents a little deeper or on the JD's we put a washer on the spring rod to tighten them.

Also very, very common for a boat-load of Allis's. There were several contributing factors and several solutions offered by Allis, including deep shift rails (about 1/8" more engagement than stock) , beefier shift forks, new gears, stronger detent springs, etc.

Gears worn on the edges from grinding when engaging a gear, or the edges on engagement dogs in constant mesh transmissions again from grinding when engaging.

Long Landtrac compact, has Mitsubishi engine and transmission. Will not go into 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th are fine. Does not grind, just will not go into gear.

This doesn't sound like the Original Poster's issue. If this is a different (your) issue you might be better off to start a new thread to reduce confusion between the two.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. Just hoped somebody would have some experience. They were talking about grinding and etc.

Usually caused by excessive wear of thrust washers, gears, etc., allowing mating parts to engage less than design specs.

Proper repair usually requires complete overhaul, which is usually not cost effective if even possible.

I bough a 50+ year old Ford 2000 4 cylinder (61-63 time line mfgr.) and 4th would jump out.......well I used it awhile and limbering things up and rubbing off some rust solved that problem......my advice, just use it and worry about it popping out later.....if it doesn't correct itself like mine did.
