Newer guy here. Looking at a few tractors. What is the difference between the 2, 8,9 tractors ? Looking at a couple of each of these.

Thanks

Short answer:

9/2N almost the same, 3speed, 6v, flathead 4cyl gas, hydraulics only work when clutch is out - engine running & pto engaged. PTO 540 RPM when clutch is out. No power steering.

8N got a 4 speed and some say a too fast reverse gear. Motor was updated in later units to a side-mount distributor but for the most part it's the same thing. 3pt hydraulics got a Position/Draft control for use with ground engaging implements.

Common upgrades include a Sherman aux transmission. Typically a Step-up which makes the 9&2 a 6 speed with 2 reverse and the 8 becomes an 8 fwd 2 rev. On the 8N you may get a Sherman Hi/Low which gives 3 trans ranges

Alot have been converted to 12v with a gm alternator

It all depends on what you want to do.

I got a 9N because it was in my budget and it beat using a shovel and wheelbarrow but I'm currently building a more modern (only 50 yrs old) 3000 series, twice the money but three times the tractor (power steering, remote live hydraulics, lifts 400lbs more on the 3pt, designed to run a loader).

yeah, cows definitely can't lift and carry as much as an 8,2,9N.

Although the leather exterior, dual intake, 4 corner independent suspension might be nice.
