Tractor purchase

MFWD for a 100 Hp is nice for the extra traction and pulling ability .And no you don't have to work \wet ground to utilize it. We can pull our 30 foot sik with the 7140 just slower with it that I doubt you could pull it much of any without a lot of slippage if it didn't have it and saves a lot on tire wear. As for the 50and 55 series Deere not having MFWD. That must be a regional thing because I would say most of them sold around here have the MFWD on them and in Beet season digging would come to almost a stop without it. I worked for a guy with a 4440 without it being available and we had to push on the elevator side a few times to keep him going so he could get through a wet spot in the filed. And if your digging in late October or early November it is not gong to dry much even with tile that time of year around here. My brother has a 2940 with MFWD and I liked it for planting since dads place has a lot of water ways in field.WE leave them for water erosion control . they can be a bit wet when the rest if the filed is dry so it was nice to be able to get across them without rutting it up by not spinning a wheel at times. No not all of it is tiled.I have been working on some of that slowly and fixing any broken tile lines. I have a couple lines yet to fix . Then that should be done for a while. So for your 100HP A 4050 is a dog for the size HP wise from the people I know of that had them and some added turbos to them. A 4250 would have a good cab and MFWd with gear drive .not the hydraulic drive of the 30and 40 series .The Box cars would be good options or even a smaller model. Case made some better cabs than the IH models so looking at a what 1070or 1370 would give you a better cab but not many were with MFWD.That was a late 80's to early 90's beginning in the States.I never under stood that reasoning. As for the models you mentioned I don't know anything about any thing that new. Hope to never have one that new with all the plastic hoods and such. The 7140 has more than I like on one now. it's 40 years old almost now.

What is wrong with your 2-105? Someone before you not keep up maintenance? Explain a little further. .... GG
I don't want to hijack this thread with a lengthy list of my thoughts on the 105, but if you look at my reply in this thread I list my reasons. But I do acknowledge that most of these are personal preference, and other folks may have completely different views.

Good day all!
I'm looking to purchase a tractor in the 100 horse range. I want this tractor to be my "go to" machine for food plots, CRP maint. and general work. My food plots consist of chisel plowing, chopping stalks with a 4 row chopper, and field cultivating. I would like a decent cab, loader, and front wheel assist I think. I sold my 1586 as I didn't use it enough. There's some tractors around me that fit all my categories. One is a Deere 3150 with 5300 hours on it. Another is a New Holland TS110 with 7800 hours. The last is a Case IH JX80U with 3900 hours. All look good in their photos and are about the same price except the 80U is a few K more. The Deere is about 10 years older than the NH, and the Case IH is an 05 but has less HP than the other 2 . Please share your thoughts on these as well as what else I should maybe be looking at.
Thanks as always!!!
Where are you located ?

I'm located in south central MN. My reasoning for MFWD is only for more traction. I've never had it before, just seems like a nice option and I'm not wanting to install and remove duals.

I've been seeing a Case IH 4240 in my area. No loader, and may be over priced at the dealer. Has 2500 hours. Thoughts???

Call Me I have a tractor that will do what you need for a reasonable price 45 miles south of Fairmont Bert 712-298-0289

If it's at a dealer, it's overpriced.

The CaseIH 4240 is one of the many restylings of the long-lived line of IH Utility tractors built in Doncaster England. Nothing to be afraid of in that particular model. They'd been building them for 30 years by that point. You have half a chance of finding a loader to fit it too, as the IH/CaseIH 2255 loader is fairly common, and most were installed on tractors like this 4240.

My advice when shopping for tractors is, "None of the above" is always an option. You don't HAVE to buy A, B, or C. You can keep looking, and I suggest you do.

Look for quality. There are lots of used tractors everywhere. You want a machine with reasonable hours which has had good service and was shedded. Inspect carefully. The cheapest machine can easily become the most expensive one when you have to fix other peoples problems.

I've driven a few different colors and sizes over the years and the one I liked the best was the White 2-105. gm
If you can find one! I shoulda never sold mine. A 2-110 and 110 are also options. Be careful about repaints where there is an added "red stripe" I don't think there was ever a 2-105 red stripe. Frankly, look for the cab with the roof with the molded in flashers. That will give you the best cab, console controls and all the best updates. Just my opinion.

4240 is a great tractor. I have 5250. 4240 has no power shift but has left hand reverser. they give less trouble than the power shift. The one I drove had a loader and worked very good.

And both of these tractors have close to 10 thousand hours.

I don't know about the 2-80or 85I know a friend of ours had a 2-65or 70 with MFWD ran fine just the foot space was small and uncomfortable when it came to moving your foot to get on and off with the lack of foot room. Otherwise seemed like a decent tractor was a bit long geared to us. Then we are used to a 574 with a loader on it and it will turn around and give you change back when done.

Well, here's an update. I'm thinking of retiring sooner than I had planned, so I think I'm going to try to find something a little older. I've seen Deere 4020's and 4230's and looks like loaders can be added, and I've seen some that already have loaders. Not stuck on Deere's, that's just what Ive seen so far in my new price range.

I had a CaseIH 5140 Maxim tractor for a good many years. 100hp CDI 6 cylinder diesel engine, 4 speed transmission with 4 power shifts in each gear. Forward/reverse lever on the left side of steering wheel. 4wd model made an excellent loader tractor with the 510 CaseIH quick attach loader with joystick. Didn’t take very long to remove or install loader. Great tractor for nearly any farm job. This was my go to tractor for tillage, planting, baling, even ran the forage harvester with it. Excellent loader for big bales or loading manure. These tractors often trade now for 25-40 Grand depending on hours and condition. Built in around 1992, so they are getting a bit of age on them

If you're going to look at older tractors, try to find one with a loader already installed. Loaders are more difficult to find for older tractors. When you buy separately, you really need to find a loader that came off the exact tractor you want to put it on, UNLESS you are willing to do some fabrication. The problem is there were so many different loaders and so many different models of tractor, piecing everything together is like finding multiple needles in multiple haystacks.

You mentioned up always 4040

We had one

We loved it

Had like 15000 hours when it left

When you say 5 shank chisel plow what are we talking about here?

As tx Jim said awhile back I’d stay away from the utilities if your going to do tillage the Waterloo built 20 30 and 40 series are the ticket and should be in the price range
Quad range 4040 with cab should be sorta reasonable and findable
