Tractor Time with Tim scam

Am a subscriber of Tractor Time with Tim on utube because he favors the John Deere compact tractors. I've been a long time user of old tractors and the compacts. He recently posted a very informative video on buying a tractor at auction. The auction price was more than attractive about 1/2 retail and his brother bought it only to find out later that serial plates had been removed, etc. He is now trying to get money back from auction company, however his post shows that when a deal seems too good to be true it is too good to be true and one should walk away. This applies to all tractors not just compacts and not just auctions. Tim did the right thing when he discovered the fraudulent sale but the horse was out the gate. Dealer came and got the tractor. I respect Tim as he was man enough to show his mistake but more so to point is out in a video for lessens learned.

So was it proven to be stolen or what was the "scam"?

If it simply had a "defect" (in this case a missing serial # plate) and it sold for 1/2 price how was it a "scam"?

Tractor stolen from a Deere dealer....person put it in auction after altering removing plates...dealer took tractor back after Tim checked with Deere....person arrested...guess Tim left holding economic bag loss....look at his video...you get the picture...

You might have simply mentioned that is was proven to be stolen in your original post.

Not all of us get off on the all nauseous camera waving and lengthy blah, blah, blah of of watching a YouTube video vs. reading the simple info "it was stolen".

You never know for sure. I have bought a lot of older equipment for half price out of season or at sales with poor advertising. Tim should have caught this one because the tractor only had 53 hours on it. Simple call to his local JD dealer would have helped him in this case as really low houred tractors are easy to track through ownership/warranty records. I usually like to talk to the original owner anyway. Your JD dealership can easily get you the recorded owners really easy through the service department records at JD. They need these for warranty reasons. You just need the complete serial number.

Seems to me the auction company should have noticed no serial number plate. And then called the proper authorities after maybe checking to see if maybe it was stolen.
To do otherwise they are dealing in stolen goods aren't they?

If the serial number plates have been removed there must be other ways then to trace ownership.
