Trade Secrets

Finished, no paint brush lines.

From some of the originals I've looked at closely, I think they used a narrow, hard roller like a printer might use for inking.

I was leaning towards that thought, but I have never saw an original, I fixed up an old 37 A years ago, I brushed the letters on that one ...

The mask and spray looks good,,but we are making these things look "much" better than they were able to back then when they were new..of course we have more time and much better stuff to work with too...

It looks like a bit of yellow got down in the edges of the "N",,,we would start over if that happened now :>)

Don"t know about the rear axle, but I have a factory video of painting unstyled tractors. Spray painting with no masks, etc. At the end, two guys show up, one holds the JD hood stencil, the other makes one swipe and the job is done.

If we would have had all of today's safety standards in place back then we would be speaking a different language today...

I agree. I was looking to paint some raised letters on a 1979 S series IH truck grille.
Looking around the paint dep't. at a big box store I found a cute little roller. Not as hard as a printers, but it worked.

I have heard of this video but have never been able to find a copy or see it. Is there somewhere it can be seen online?

I'll bet that is right, Frank. And odds are they used the same silk screen paint as was used on the hood. Silk screen paint is very thick and would have worked pretty well on those raised surfaces. Mike

The narrow, hard rubber roller is a good idea. My dad worked in an automotive battery factory years ago and painted the raised lettering on the battery cases with a hard rubber roller. He put the paint on a piece of cardboard and got it very dry and sticky before using it. Lettering looked great when he finished.

The brush, and the roller ways all will work out okay,,but this job with the masking tape and spray is "excellent"....
