I traded my 39 9n and 52 8n for a near MINT 640... they both had issues that I didn't have the time, nor the finances to deal with right now... I run a business, and need to work NOW... 9n had sticking lift... starter lockup...tires shot... 8n all banged up... pump chatter... bad relief valve... (dropping heavy load)... and also had electrical issues... The guy I traded these to, had 30 9n/8n/Ferg tractors... many with Sherm trannies.. ect.. (no joke!!)..If I play my cards right, I told him to hold my lil' 9n until I can buy it back... I know this is a 9n/2n/8n forum... but I wanna stay part of it... I will have an "N" again soon!! With all your help, I can even find one DIRT CHEAP... and get her going!.. you all on here are a WEALTH of knowledge... Thank you all!!

If once you've had a 640 it's doubtful you will wish to buy another N.

Keep in mind tho...
You just traded a couple of 60-70 year old tractors for a 50-60 year old tractor.
Don't expect it to run flawlessly unless you are willing to tinker with it.
If you need a turnkey, no fixum tractor look at a 50 hp 2006 and newer Kubota, JD or New Holland.

that 640 will have the same points setup and feeding habits of a late 8n.. more hp, better axle seals and hubs.. better hyds ( easier to use external hyds and live ), and a very good red tiger OHV engine...
once I hit 53+ ( really 55+ ) machines.. I pretty much lost interest in 39-52 machines...

We have two N's and several 640's here too.
Like I put it in an earlier post:
"First time I bushhogged with the 640 I thought I heard the angels sing!"
The extra power and live hyds are wonderful. But you may find 1st gear speed is a bit faster than either of your N's, so be careful in tight spots.
Also, the N's have their uses too. Lots handier for moving boom pole loads inside the barn.
The case can be made for multiple tractors. Keep several running so you can take your time during the tear down and rebuild of a third.
