Trailer Tires

How long do you run trailer tires? I just bought a different gooseneck trailer, the tires are dated 46/12. 46th week of 2012, 10 years old, tires look good and plenty of tread on them, but not sure I trust them for hauling tractors to rides or shows. I've been told to replace tires after 7 years, I don't want flats traveling loaded, thinking about replacing them now.
Tractor is about 7000#s, Oliver 1550. Trailer is tandem axle, single tires

It's radial tires which are made to self destruct. If your tires are bias tires just keep an eye on them looking for cracks. I ran bias tires on my jeep for more than 23 years. A lot depends on how the tires are kept. If the trailer sits in the sun every day the tires won't last as long.

Old tires used to last forever. Newer tires not so much. If your trailer has 16 inch rims, Ive had the best luck running LT load range E tires.

If you dont mind dealing with blown tires on the side of the road, get an extra spare and run the current one till they let go. If you are lazy like I am, buy new tires.

I hate charging flats on the road. So if there is any chance they will blow, I replace them. I wont buy anything less than a 14 ply tire for my trailers.

My take, proven time and time again, is that isn't the tire or the manufacturer necessarily, it's how the owner treats them. If you take the necessary precautions to protect your tires they could last a decade.....why do I say that....because mine last that long......why? You figure it out.

12 year old tires on my trailer didnt go flat. Instead the plys separated on the inside of 3 of the tires. Outsides looked good. I would just replace now

All depends on how often you use it ,how far you go and the speed with load. We have some old nylon or rayon tires on wagons made from old trucks that were on the frame when I made the wagon 40 years ago. there are still some of them on there yet. granted it doesn't go fast down the road behind a tractor. With a truck it is pulled at about 45-60 down the road. Tracks right with you at that speed.

What size tires? Many of the 16'' tires on trailers are light truck tires and hold up better because they are higher speed rated (M or N), most 17.5 tires are lower speed rated due to cost and don't last long, problem is they look perfect up until the minute they blow out. When buying tires for any trailer you are money ahead to buy the higher speed rated tires whether you pull that fast or not. I always get at least speed rating ''M'' when buying trailer tires.

I would definitely replace them especially if they are ST-rated tires. ST for Special Trailer.

They can look fine and have plenty of tread, and still have a blowout. That's the nature of trailer tires.

The compounds used in making tires have changed so they take UV light poorly compared to tires from decades ago. It most likely would be a good time to replace yours and maybe keep the old ones for spares. If they will fit keep them for implement tires. Storing your trailer out of the sunlight would be a help.

I go by the 7 yr. rule. I don't want to be changing a tire on the side of an interstate. BTDT and it's not fun nor safe.

They may look good on the outside, but they are dry rotted on the inside. Six years is the limit. Anything beyond that is a gamble.
