tranny shifter problem

just picked up a 40 9n, and when you push it in neutral the shifter clicks of the gears, doesnt engage just must be rubbing them. when i hold the shifter to the left or right side it stops the clicking. it does go into all the gears

The transmission shifter cover is made of
aluminum. There is a slot where a pin on the
shifter rides. it has worn so that the lower end
of the shift lever is riding on a gear in the
transmission when in neutral. Fix is to build the
worn area up with weld and regrind to original
specs. Somewhere I have a drawing showing the
proper dimensions. If someone else does not post
it I will dig it up and post later.

I'm not really sure what you are saying. "push it in neutral"? You
don't push it in neutral. You put it in neutral. Are you pushing the
tractor and trying to engage the gears while doing so? Does the
tractor run? Tractor has to be setting still when the engine is
running to change the gears. Push the clutch in while not moving
and put it into the gear you want either reverse, or 1st, 2nd, or 3td.
If you are trying to push or pull start it, put it in the gear you want.
Push in the clutch. Start the tractor rolling then let out on the clutch
once moving.

when i push the [color=red:7b436c8940][/color:7b436c8940]tractor while its in neutral the shifter clicks you can even see the shifter slightly "bouncing" its like its riding slightly on the gears. then if i hold the shifter to the left or right it stops the clicking

Yes you have to take the cover off. I am out of
town, when I get home I'll send some pictures and
I think I can find a drawing showing the proper
dimensions of the slot. This is a common problem
on early Ns. I have done this repair a couple of
times.

Angelp, here is a link to a former posters web
site. There are pictures of his '39 9N. Click on
the 'restore' section. A little less than 1/2 of
the way through you can see his solution.

after looking at the pic. i should be able to tell by taking off the rubber boot around the shifter and see if its worn?
