Trans Brake

I recently hooked my 706 to a 3 point backhoe, put it in neutral, and set the trans brake. When digging with the backhoe I dragged the 706 all over with the trans brake slipping / clicking. Is it not meant to hold that strong? Is it just out of adjustment? I've never given one any stress before...

If it is clicking it needs adjustment. No doubt the linkage is bent as they bend when you try to
force them into park. You adjust it so there is some over center feel when it engages and it may be
necessary to move tractor just a little bit by rocking it to get full proper engagement. When
trying to put it into park and it does not easily drop in, just turn the steering wheel back and
forth and usually that will move gear enough to align cogs with park pawl. (it is a park lock, not
transmission brake as that is a separate existing device on that tractor).

Just so you understand better, it is not a "trans brake" it is a PARK LOCK, a physical hook (aka pawl) that engages the teeth of the reverse gear in the transmission and prevents it from turning.

It's not a "brake" and does not "slip." If it's "slipping," it's doing damage to the pawl and/or the reverse gear. The reverse gear is the last one to come out and the first one to go back in so a VERY $expensive$ repair. In other words, the entire tractor must be disassembled to fix it.

You might get by with an adjustment. Hope you didn't damage anything too badly. You'll know if you hear a tick as you drive the tractor in reverse.

If you're going to drag it around with the backhoe, please leave the park lock disengaged. Use the stabilizers to keep the tractor from rolling around.

I apologize if this is a little curt, but this sort of tractor abuse irks me, even when done out of "innocent" ignorance. Especially when you heard the clicking, knew something wasn't right, yet continued on with your task... At the very least you should have disengaged the park lock to stop the clicking. Maybe you did and if you did, I apologize.

I did disengage the lock after a minute when I realized it wouldn't hold and just used the stabilizers.

I currently have a Gas 706 I just bought split for a stripped ring gear. Found a ton of wear and replacing everything from the flywheel / pressure plate back to the Independent PTO Drive Gear. Not wanting to split another. ;)

This is not good and like others hav e said this is not a brake , but you keep on doing this and it will break and it will break the piggy bank to fix it . If it is the old style PARK LOC then they are adjustable IF the adjustment linkage is NOT bent . I have worked on bought and sold a lot of 706's over the years and the one thing i do on all that have crossed my path is do away with the old style park linkage and install the spring loaded parkloc . NOW as for DRAGGEN your tractor around with the hoe best advice i can give you is DON"T DO it , ya don't even want to do that with a industrial back hoe that is what the stabilizers are for your rolling parking brake . Guess the only way people learn not to beat up there tractors is to smash your fingers a few times while rebuilding the rear end .

There is a "spring loaded parkloc" option available? As in - press the brake peddles down and lock them there? I'd love that - where can I find that upgrade kit? I'd much rather have that.

NO it is a heavy spring that goes inside the range cover aropund the rod hooked to the pawl , you change some linkage on the outside as well . When you drop the park loc lever it drops in under spring pressure and will hold the tractor aand load on a hill of somany degrees angle where as the OLD way would not hold . NOW the down side is you do not want to drop the park loc lever till the tractor is at a dead stop or it will eat teeth on the reverse gear liike M & M' s. Now many years ago a few people installed Micro brake locks , lets just say that this did not work well and either the tractor took off on it's own due to slight leakage in the brake system or people forgot that it was on and stuffed the tractor in gear and came off the clutch and plum trashed the rear end doing so , My uncle tried this as he bought the second 806 sold and on our hills with a heavy load the old style park loc would kick out and off to the races , NOT good setting hooked to a tater harvester with seven people on board the harvester , so he tired the Micro brake loc and if it sat to long on a hill pressure would bleed off and off to the races once again . .

Looking into making a wooden block to wedge between pushed brake pedals and the metal decking. Instant parking brake?

That is a big NEGATORY driver!

Reference the tractor vet's aforementioned leakdown. The brakes will bleed off, and away she rolls!

The park locks do have their issues, but if you fix it get it adjusted and working right, and use it properly, you can rely on it.
