Trans noise

Hi All,

I have a 52 8n and it makes a bad bearing noise. The noise is present whenever the clutch is not depressed. My first thought was main drive bearing, but am hoping that it is a throw out bearing. One wired thing. Sometimes when the trans is in neutral it will still move, if I break it stops and then is fine (noise present but not moving). To me this tells me that the clutch is not disengaging properly. Is there any hope for a clutch/pressure plate problem. Or is it a trans issue for sure?

That sounds for sure like an input shaft to mainshaft bearing to me. Better plan on pulling the cover and doing an inspection.

Yup thats what I am afraid of. Is that connected to the clutch not disengaging properly? I am not certain that I understand that 100%. I know I know I am clutching at straws here.

Folks are hung up on all bearing noises being the input BRG,,, sorry to tell ya but it does not work by its long sum,,, plan to replace them all...

OK thanks. Looks like I will just have to accept that facts and rebuild the trans. Anyone know some one in western nc that rebuilds them and what they cost? Or is it not too hard? I have lots of mechanical experience, but have never done a transmission before.

If you have it in neutral, and it still moves. that is interesting to me.
Clutch in or out?

I would think that would cause a grinding noise.
Of gears touching each other.

Hobo, may once again, really be on to something here.

What oil do you have in the rear end?

IT seems odd to me to. Let me describe. I take my 2 year old boy for a ride. We get home, I pull it under the carport. I shift it into neutral and let the clutch out and it moves forward. If I hit the breaks it stops and will sit there in neutral just fine.

Sorry, got sleepy. It is the 90wt mineral oil or equivalent from the ford tractor dealer. It is a generic, but I will look it up when I get home. The fluid has been completely changed twice back to back do to water. The case had oil and water in it when I got the tractor. This is what made me jump to the trans bearings right of, but the moving in neutral and is throwing me.

No grinding noises. The trans oil is Super S GL1 90 wt. How hard is it to go through one. They don't look too complicated, but I guess that can be deceiving.

I went thru a 8N transmission this winter. Not that hard to do at all. take pictures before and during disasssembly. Keep you service manual handy!

Thanks I think I will give it a try! If I get lost I may send it over to Hobo. Maybe he won't charge extra for my errr help.
