transmission and hyd fuild change

Thanks for the help the 8n was my grandfathers so I don"t know much about servicing it. I have one more question that I am not sure about. By reading the owners manual it said that I need to change the transmission oil and hyd oil. What type of oil do I need. I am almost sure that regular hyd oil for the hyd but what do I put in the tranmission. Thanks for all the advise. Chris

You DO NOT want regular hydraulic oil. The transmission, hydraulic pump, and differential share a common sump. You need either a universal transmission fluid (UTF) type oil or a conventional SAE 80/90 gear oil - 5g total. You can get them at TSC, Walmart, NAPA, etc You will likely get all sorts of opinions on which is better. I prefer the UTF - it is a better hydraulic fluid and works well in cold weather, Others prefer the gear oil - especially if the hydraulic lift is worn. It's thicker and works a little better in a worn hydraulic lift.

But I repeat - DO NOT use a plain hydraulic oil in any of the sumps - use one of the two types I just described.

crisco.........yer grandpa's 8N uses 5-gal of hydro-tranny oil for everything. Ford/New Holland recommends spec: M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil. (its their version of UTD) Iff' yer hydraulic lift is weak, use the 1939 recommended 90wt mineral gear oil. GL-1 is modern number. Surprizingly enuff, both are readily available at WalMart, TSC, NAPA.

Drain yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil starting with the little squarehead diffy plug 'cuz it peeees in the buckett with some degree accuracy. Then the 3-in tranny plug. And yes, there's supposed to be danglin' cotterkeys outta yer tranny to keep the drain hole clear of oilmud. Finally, drain yer 3-in hydraulic pump plate. (NOT the corner pressure test port)

Fill'em-up is 3-in twist-off cap by yer tranny shifter lever. Pour SLOW 'cuz it gotta go thru yer tranny gears. Check yer tranny fill-level by removing the bottom 6-o'clock bolt of yer tranny dipstick plate. Lett enny overfill drain down the side of yer tranny overnite. OVERFILL splashes out yer axle trumpets mouth and greeses yer brakeshoes. NOT GOOD, eh?
