Transmission Clunk

Good evening, I have a 1950 John Deere B (SN 267148) and it has developed a "clunk" in the transmission. It only happens when in gears on the right side, 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse. The noise speeds up and slows down with tractor speed. I have blocked the back of the tractor up and put it in gear, held one wheel in place while I rotated the other wheel, can feel and here it in the transmission. Has anyone had any experience with this? I have removed the inspection plate and looked for broken tooth but haven't found anything yet. If you any direction to point me towards to get started I would appreciate it.

There is most likely a broken tooth on the low range gear. That's the gear change when you move the lever acrossed the bottom slot of the shift pattern.

Okay, I pulled the gear shift column off tonight and found this main gear had some teeth problems. Would this be enough to cause the clunking?

Jack up one wheel and roll it by hand so you can inspect all the gear teeth on all the shafts.

I had a G 50+ years ago that had a "clunk". A bearing went out on a transmission shaft that came out of the gear case behind the pulley 10 Inches or so. A ball went all the way down to the bottom taking a tooth out on the PTO drive gear. Of course to use hydraulics you had to run the PTO. We found the PTO shaft and gear used at a guy that had machinery parts and a field of machinery for parts. (which I used later to find a part for a JD 490 corn planter) He had the part out of a tractor. So the tractor went to my Uncle Floyd's : a tractor mechanic. He let me take the transmission apart; all the way to the bottom to get to that PTO shaft/gear. He gave me guidance as a put it back together. My Father had passed and I was still in High School. Mission accomplished!

Yep, diff, bull gear and brake pinions. I think his problem lies elswhere.

Yes you are correct, it is the differential assembly. Didn't realize that last night when I took picture. Don't believe that is causing the clunking noise because it would happen in every gear. Am going to drain the gear case (hopefully tonight) so I can see all the gears down lower in the assembly.
