transmission Leak / Splitting JD A

I'm down to the last few projects getting my '46 A on the road. On filling the transmission for the first time (it was empty when I got it) I found that I have a leak at the front of the transmission. Turns out most of the bolts holding the two halves together were loose. I snugged them all up, probably 1/4 turn or more, and could see the gap close up. But there is still a larger leak than I'm comfortable with. It isn't pouring out, but there is a definite drip.

What are my options? Split the tractor and replace the gasket? Or maybe it's possible to seal it up without going to such an extreme? If I have to split it, what kind of a job am I in for?

Any advice appreciated.

Splitting the tractor to replace the gasket is a breeze. Just use some common sense in securing the two halves of the tractor. Have the drawbar in the long position so it can hit the floor in case the rear of the tractor tips backward. Ask me how I know. LOL

Split it and sand the seal surfaces down use 3M super weather strip adhesive (the Black looks better) on both sides of the gasket, replace the old bolts with grade 8,,the old bolts are soft and over the years of banging across dead furrows they stretch out a bit,,don't be one of those guys that take a pan with to a show to catch drips,,or leave the oil out completely to stop the leak..

Thanks gents. It doesn't sound too bad. Anything I should be doing while it's open? Any dangers to look out for other than losing a finger or getting crushed?

I have no plans whatsoever to show my tractor. I just don't want $150 worth of gear oil leaking out in my yard!
