Transmission "snapped" on 8N

I've come to this list a number of times for help. Here I go again.

After this recent epic storm, I managed to dig out using the front loader. It was sort of like eating a gallon of icecream with a toothpick, but it worked.

I was finishing up and got bogged down. I rocked the tractor a bit and something snapped. It will not go forward or reverse. The rear hyraulics still work when I let out the clutch, but only a dreadful sound when I try to put it in gear.

Since Henry Ford has been reported to be a frugal man, I'm hoping there is some weak link meant ot fail and I can fix if handily. Where do I start?

Thanks,

Mike Gilchrist

Pull the inspection port cover and see if the driveline coupler broke.

Could have broke a axle too.

That looks like a start Sean. I guess I need to get it pulled into the barn first. It's still out in the yard. Pulling that plate requires I drain the fluid first I take it?

One of the big problems is securing the front loader up so I can pull it. I used my hi-lift jack last time. I already secured the blade with a chain so it's not going to drag.

Your pic shows that plate at the back of the tractor? I hate to seem so dense, put I am willing to learn/fix it/save money.

Mike,

You can remove the round hydraulic dipstick inspection cover on the right side of the tractor and check the coupler that way (without draining fluids). Engine OFF, you can reach in and carefully feel around...

You can remove the transmission shifter cover without draining and take a peek at your transmission gears.

You'd need to pull an axle trumpet (after draining) to check your ring gear.

You don't have to drain oil to pull that Cover just to inspect to see if coupler is broken.
You will only lose a Little Or No fluid if it is a little low.The oil Level will only be right about the bottom hole if it is at correct (Fluid Level)You can pull 6 Bolts out of the cover your dipstick is in and Hope it is the coupler.
Other things are More $$$$$$
I have Broken 2 in the 8n I had For 14+ years.

Both of you have been helpful; thanks. I went out and secured the bucket. The Hi-Lift jack fits right in the frame nicely to keep it off the ground.

There is a layer of ice on the ground no from refrozen snow. I have not been able to recover it with winch and Jeep; I'm just sliding.

Remarkably the beast started right up and purred like a kitten; the points, plugs, wires and coil really helped there. It was out all night without the block heater plugged in.

I am probably not going to open those inspection plates today. I think we have some nicer days coming right up. I'm sure I'll be back for help!

The coupler, if broken will be obvious? Will I find it in pieces? How and where does it fail? Is that the weak link engineered into the drivetrain?

This old 8N, a 1949 has just worked with few issues for me since I bought it 4 years ago. It pulls a 50s Ford flail mower on the acreage during summer. I want to keep it.

Nice! Thanks! I hope that is what it is.

The question now is, what does it involve to fix it, or should I cross that bridge when I get there?

It will suffice to tell me how long the average person would take to do it, and then I'll multiply by the time by 4. :-)

It ALWAYS takes me longer to do things than the average person. I generally see to it that I make extra work myself on most projects.

Thanks all,

Mike

You have to split tractor between transmission and final drive if the coupler broke. You will have to open the inspection port first then we can go from there. Report back when you get a look inside. Hopefully you get a break in the weather so you can get it in the barn.
