Transmission Trouble

Mad Max (TX)

I recenty rebuilt the motor and replaced some other parts on my 8N refurbish project. The tractor runs and drives fine now. The tractor hasn't ran for 25 to 30 years before the rebuild. The transmission will shift into 2,4 and reverse but not 1 or 3. During the engine rebuild I took the top cover off transmission and poured some ATF over all gears but I did not notice any broken parts. Does this mean my transmission is shot and needs rebuilt? Thanks for any advice.

Take the cover back off and move things around till all gears are in neutral. Replace cover.

Mad Max+,Like Zane said remove the top cover.Make sure the shifting rails and forks all move in all the gear positions,Then oil the rails and shifter up good,Oil all the sliding gears and shafts good, chrck for rust and corrosion .After you hav them all movtng freely.Put all the gears in neutral position, before putting the top cover on.

I agree with Zane , I had one do the same thing when I bought it, I took the top off , used a pry bar (lightly) to move things around , I freed up a slider bar with very little force , oiled it up and kept working it till shifts smoothly. Works great now. good luck.
